New Kitten has diarrhoea....What should I do?

Hello again!
I posted about my kitten crying, and thanks for your answers. He is generally doing much better and is adjusting well into family life and even coping with my 14m dd tormenting him!

He came to us last tuesday. The owners said they were feeding him on felix adult food. I was given some whiskers kitten pouches so was giving him them which he wolfed down as well as whiskers kitten dried.

Anyway, after a couple of days he started getting diarrhoea. Could this be a change of food or something more sinister? Or simply the change in surroundings? He is doing well in so many other ways.

I've offered him felix kitten pouches, iams, hills science, and he has turned his nose up at all of them. The only thing he has eaten is whiskers, which I dont know if I should continue? If it is the food giving him the runs will it just sort itself out in time as I dont really want to give him felix adult.

Thanks for your help

i would take him to the vet, diorreah can kill a kitten really quickly

yes, you need to take him to the vet's. He's still really tiny, isn't he? I really wouldn't faff about with trying various foods. He may well need antibiotics, and some special food.

He needs to go to the vet, I'm afraid.

our kitten had diarrhoea, (lasted a couple of days, with it getting back to normal slowly each day!) but other than that she was running around like a mad woman!! I didn't take her to the vets as she was well in herself, i stopped giving her soft food and gave her kitten biscuits, it didn't take long for her to get back to normal, i guessed she must have eaten some food (not hers!) that had fallen on the floor while my children were eating!!

Hi pinkpeanut, how is your kitten getting on? I would agree that really he needs to go to the vet as dehydration resulting from diarrhoea can be very dangerous for little kittens. Hope he is better.

Our kittens both developed raging squits at 12 weeks on a diet of Whiskas kitten food and James Wellbeloved biscuits. Our vet told us to lay off the biscuits, and prescribed some "bunging-up" powder to be sprinkled on Science Plan (I think) food which we had to buy from the surgery. She also told us to make sure they had lots of fresh water (which they did anyway, but we made sure there were two bowls down instead of just one).

They both cleared up after a couple of days on the new diet, and went happily back to Whiskas kitten food ( only in jelly as gravy irritated them too) but no biscuits on the vet's advice.

They are 10mo now and still get the squits occasionally ( mainly when they've mounted a raid on bread, pastries, biscuits or somesuch - wheat intolerance anyone? ) but we are starting to introduce adult food now (wet and dry).

Interestingly enough, they never get diarrhoea when they eat our cooked scraps - I suspect mass-manufactured cat food really is utterly full of Bad Stuff

Hi, thanks for asking. His diarrhoea has resolved, I'm thinking that it was a settling into new home thing. He doesn't have a good appetite however. He will only eat the whiskas sachets and when I put one down he turns his nose up at it and walks off. He eats about one sachet a day (although I offer him two) and just a handful of biscuits and that's it. Is that normal?

That amount seems about right to me for a young kitten. For what it's worth, many cats I know get the runs if they're given cow's milk...?

I have two 10 month old small animal killers kittens and they only eat 1 sachet each a day plus biscuits.

I give them half a sachet each am and the same pm. They usually always have a small amount of biscuits to pick at during the day.
