Bereaved cat , what helps?

Hello,

I messaged a while ago because we had to have one of my beloved cats put down due to cancer. I posted to ask advice and agree that rushing into getting another cat is a bad idea but I am really worried about my surviving cat. He is constantly on my lap for hours at a time and seems very depressed but is eating ok. Lots of extra cuddles happening and we sleep together at night but is there anything that people have found helps?
please see picture of him sitting on me now for cat tax.

Bless his heart. What’s his name?

Beautiful cat 😺 ❤️ they are grieving, did they get to see the other cat when they passed away?? Sometimes it helps them x sorry for your loss x

We had 2 brothers. For 8 years. 1 died. 1 grieved for 5 hard months. We got a dkitten. Wish I had got her sooner...
Still best friends 5 years on.

I did end up getting another as mine wasn’t coping well on his own

You're doing the right things offering cuddles and time together.
Cliche but time is a healer. They need time just like we do bless them and it might be a case of trust the process.
One of our boys lost his brother 18 months ago and he was very quiet afterwards, withdrawn. It seemed to help him to be outside more, playing occasionally and he did seem to appreciate seeing other cats in the garden for company (although as a young Tom he soon started brawling with them again - which in itself is kinda a return to normality!)
It's a good sign that he's eating. Trust your gut regarding getting another cat. It can help 💓

Hi thanks all, these messages are comforting and helpful. I will see how we go and perhaps look into getting a kitten later in the summer if the time is right.his name is Monkey and he is a Siamese so very vocal and cuddly my husband named him Monkey because he is normally a cheeky happy boy!

Ah so sorry, what a lovely boy 🐾 😿

Sadly we’re going through exactly the same as we lost one of our beloved boys three weeks ago. We’re all heartbroken- our cats are a huge part of the family. Our remaining cat is 16 and like many older cats he doesn’t like anything changing. He’s been going about the house howling which is awful to hear.

We’ve just started using two Feliway plug ins downstairs. Tbh I didn’t think they’d do much, but he has been yowling noticeably less and seems calmer although I’m sure he’s still feels sad. At least he’s a bit less distressed. It’s probably too soon to be certain though as we’ve only used them for two days, but could be worth a try.

Ive dreaded the day we’d lose our cats, they really mean the world don’t they? The house seems so strange without them both. And we lost him so quickly it was such a shock 😢 xx

My 2 tabby boys... And the sad one with his new bestie. CPL had a lone dkitten. She was tiny.
