Did Your Cat Choose You

I’ve always found it fascinating how cats seem to choose their person rather than the other way around. When we first brought our cat home, I assumed they’d bond most with the person who feeds them — but that didn’t happen at all! Instead, they randomly picked one family member and now follow them everywhere.Do you think cats genuinely “choose” their human, or is it just about routine and comfort?Would love to hear your experiences — especially if your cat surprised you with their favourite person!

Cat tax, @james5555 - you need to share a photo of your cat first & tell us her / his name!

I used to have 2 cats, one preferred DH, the other me - no idea on what basis! But yes, I agree they seem to chose their person, I wish I knew why the choice. Current cat chose us to live with - moved himself in & wouldn't go home so his owner gave him to us (to cut long story short) & he loved DH for 3 yrs, then just switched to me recently - maybe he thinks DH now has fleas 🤔

She did but I think probably based on the food thing😉 It’s a difficult one though- while she follows me about and runs I’m when she sees my car, I am the only one she’ll nip/ scrab, but also the one she lies down behind/ goes to in the sitting room. I have to be on my guard all the time😅

My two chose me out of necessity. The boy had been a local stray for years but I had never seen the girl until she appeared to be eating the seed from my birdtable. She was so thin and I traced her footsteps in the snow and realised she was living under a rotting caravan. I started to feed her and gradually managed to touch her and then stroke her and now, I carry her around like a baby or around my neck. We love each other for ever and ever.

Once the boy saw she had it good, he joined in and they are part of the family now. Pair of lard arses that they are.

I was never really a cat person but I find endless joy in loving/feeding/grooming and generally being a bell hop for these two.

Many years ago and sadly long gone. We went to visit a small cat rescue and this ginger tom climbed into the hood of my husband's duffle coat so of course he came home with us. Bless you Stanley.

That’s so funny how they switch loyalty like that! 😄 It really does feel like they “choose” based on their own criteria.

We had a bit of a funny situation with our cat. We enquired about a cat we’d seen on the rescue website and were invited to come and meet this particular cat. When we went into the pen the original cat we’d travelled to see couldn’t have been less interested in us, literally turned its back to us and we just felt no connection whatsoever (and I do understand often cats can be nervous in these situations but it was more than that, almost an instant nope feeling). However, there was another cat in the pen next door that was desperate to get to us, chirruping and trying to climb the netting to get to us. The lady opened the gate to let him through and he was rubbing himself all over us but she said he’d been reserved by another family so wasn’t available. So went home feeling a bit sad as the original cat wasn’t right and the one who seemed to love us wasn’t available. We then got a phone call 2 days later to say the second cats adoption had fallen through and would we be interested as she said she’d never seen a cat so adamant he wanted to go home with someone 😳😂 so a couple of days later he came home with us! Been with us over a year now and is loved to bits.

I know, and there's little we can do about it!

Aaahhh @Pepperedpickles- look at him. He absolutely made the right choice I can tell he’s very spoiled and king of the castle!!

Kitty was my 9th foster cat & was nearly adopted twice quite early on, but both fell through & it gradually became clear that she wasn’t going anywhere.

Our first cat was from CP and she made it very clear she wanted us to notice her. Tapping at the glass, chirps, sideways head and finally the biggest purr ever when we said hello. They opened the door and she jumped straight down and trotted to the outside doors with her tail held upright as though to say follow me! She was utterly adorable and the best cat ever 💔

Our next one was found starving and severely injured eating the food we'd been putting out for another starving stray (he stood back so she could eat). He was starting to trust us enough to come indoors and after a couple of months managed to grab him and take him to a small cat rescue, so we were able to concentrate on her. We had to do a vet kidnap as she suddenly came into heat despite being skin and bones and paid to get her spayed. Kept her ever since as all the rescues were too full to take her and we didn't want to kick her out as it was obvious she would die a slow and painful death. It's taken her two years to find that lying next to us is nice, especially when it's cold, but her very loud purrs from the other side of the bed in the middle of the night makes me think she's happy here. Phew, that was long!

Our cat Titch, who butchered all my tulips, died last February. She had cancer. We were devastated. Next day l went to Wales to visit my mum. Back at the end of the week to find this idiot had come over the roof, in through my son's attic window and moved himself in.

Not how l wanted to get a new cat but we had no choice. We are now quite fond of him! (He is called Socks though other names have been used)

The older cat (a girl) is mostly interested in me whereas the younger one (a boy) will split his time. I usually wake up with him lying against the back of my head - although he does get quite stroppy if DH is on his iPad and is in his way to lie on DH's chest.

Feeding is spilt between DH and me so I don't know what the criterion is!
