Cat insurance premium has doubled

We have a 13 year old moggie with kidney failure. She’s over 3 years post-diagnosis and it’s managed with renal diet and some bladder support supplementation. The vet recently commented how well she was doing after 3 years,.

Last year we claimed just over £500 and paid just over £60pcm for insurance (lifetime cover so haven’t changed insurance companies for a few years).

This year the insurance has literally doubled. I’ve just had my renewal quote through and it’s £125 pcm so over £1500 per year. DH says cancel it.

We wouldn’t put her through any invasive tests or treatment at this stage and def not any surgeries. We all love her but we wouldn’t want her to suffer.

We can put the £125 per month aside in case she needs bloods or a urine analysis - if she doesn’t need treatment then we keep the money or at least some of it. We’ve also changed vets fairly recently to ones that are much more conservative in their approach and don’t suggest ‘all the tests’. She only really goes in the garden so isn’t going to get run over or anything like that. She’s up to date with her vaccines too.

id like to hear what others pay for their older and ‘infirm’ moggies.

Personally, given her age and what you've said, I would absolutely put that £125 aside each month instead of the insurance. A 50% rise is a shocker!

Who is your insurance plan with? You're probably at the stage where if you try to change insurers you're not going to get it much more cheaply especially with pre-existing conditions.

Mine also doubled. Last time it happened they did reduce it. But they wouldn’t this time.
