cost of neutering dog

I have just been to the vet to book my dog (labrador) in for neutering and been quoted £252 which i feel is a lot!

Didnt do my research beforehand, so dont know what I was expecting but i thought it might be about £100.

The total amount includes £44 for a blood test to check his liver and kidneys are working normally.

This is a lot, assuming your dog is male. Ours was done for less than £100. Vets' fees seem to vary massively across the country.

Oh and I think that our vet charges about £10 for that blood test. (Of course, costs do vary with size of dog, and ours is small.)

I think vet prices vary a lot. TBH you don't need to have the kidney test - if he was an old or ill dog, fair enough, but not a young healthy dog. I think you would be lucky to get a medium/large dog like a lab neutered for a £100 but agree that £252 is a lot.

The £100 figure I had in my head was not based on any reasarch, but never thought it would be as much as this.

Not sure what to do now as i dont want to be ripped off, is it ok to shop around when it comes to vets? I might ring round to get an idea of what other vets charge.

Yes, you can shop around for prices! Sometimes it's better to go for word of mouth as well though, much like hospitals, vets can also vary in cleanlines etc. Good luck!

And I would have to take him and pick him up myself as they do the operations in the next town half an hrs drive away. He is too big to fit in their van.

Our vet costs £60 all in for dog neutering. The vet only does neutering and vaccs to keep costs down.

bloody hell that is expensive. 7 years ago it cost me £85 to get my dog snipped and they had to get one of his testicles from his chest as it never descended!
may have something to do wiht where you live?

what with tellign you to have blood tests which is not routine to do just for a neutering sounds like they are after your money more than your dogs welfare. htough who isnt these days?
sod the tests, that is usually only recommended if yourdog is showing outward symptoms of the disease usually!

I have just rung another vet, one that a friend reccomended and they said they would charge approx £160 and they dont routinely do that blood test unless you request it.

Think I will have to ring original vet and see what thy say, but i hate confrontation...

My dog was neutered a few weeks ago, it cost £100, they said it was £100 for under 20kg, and £120 for over, so yours would probably be £120 at my vets. You could try asking around, I'd go on recommendation, we've been with our vets over 10yrs and they are very good, but we're in Somerset. Can you ask other dog walkers? I'd hunt around for different vets as if they overcharge you for neutering they'll probably do it with everything else too. I would never ask them to come and collect my dog though, I imagine they would charge alot for that, half an hour drive isn't bad. Hope you manage to find somewhere.
