Is this too long to leave

We have a situation over the coming weeks where the dog might be left alone from 4pm to the next morning. He will have been walked twice before he has is left. Then a friend will call in the next morning and feed and walk him.

He’s been left for a few hours before but never on his own for this long. He’s not the sort of dog to destroy anything, it’s more that I would worry about him

Yes, too long.

Bloatedas · 01/12/2025 21:53

Omg you cannot do this. How are you even thinking of leaving a dog alone for over 12 hours and overnight?

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 01/12/2025 21:55

I don't know how anybody could contemplate doing this. That poor dog 😒

BaileyHorse · 01/12/2025 21:56

Personally I wouldn’t even consider leaving my dog overnight as described above.

Luxio · 01/12/2025 21:57

Of course its too long. Even if your friend comes first thing in the morning at 6am which seems unrealistic he will still have been left for over 14 hours minimum.

somewhereintheworld · 01/12/2025 21:58

No, you can't do this. Four hours is the maximum time you can leave a dog on its own. Why not get a dog sitter or use a kennels?

AutumnLeavesFallingFast · 01/12/2025 22:04

I wouldn't leave a dog overnight.

I don't really know why as they just sleep, but it FEELS like leaving a toddler alone overnight.

but no, I wouldn't leave them for that many hours.

dont you have any friends/their teenagers that would stay overnight? I regularly stay at my friends to look after their dogs.

failing that you need to get a sitter or book him into a home stay.

Secretdestroyers · 01/12/2025 22:05

Absolutely not. Perhaps if your friend could also walk him in the evening, but even that would be pushing it. Definitely not from 4pm until the next morning. He'll need the toilet in that time period for a start, surely?!

DramaQueenlady · 01/12/2025 22:06

Would you be able to go that long without a pee! 3 - 4 hours is the max they are meant to be left. Its pure neglect as well you know

Overthebow · 01/12/2025 22:07

You can’t leave your dog overnights you need to get a dog sitter, or kennels, or don’t go away.

Itschristmaas · 01/12/2025 22:27

Ok thanks. We will find another solution. He usually goes to a family member but they are unable to look after him this time and as he’s so good I thought maybe it was possible but we can do something else.

As someone who seems to spend an inordinate amount of time sorting the dog out with his walker or daycare or a friend, just so I can get through the week with work the answer is no absolutely not!
