Hi all,
I was driving to collect my little girl from school and I hit a cat. it literally ran out in front on me so I had no way of stopping. I pulled over and me and another lady stayed with it, but it died almost straight away 😭
I feel absolutely awful. The cat has a collar with its number on it and I’ve just told the owner, it was heartbreaking.
I have two kittens and lost a cat which was run over by a car. So I know what they are going through. I feel so sad for them.
I don’t know why I’ve come on here, I’m traumatised 😭😭😭

That’s tragic for everyone involved but you did everything you could under the circumstances.

BuffaloCauliflower · 11/09/2025 16:53

Poor you. I hit a fox once going 50mph in the dark, it just leapt out and I didn’t see it until it was in front of me. Nothing I could have done but I felt awful. You’ve stopped, stayed with the cat and told the owner, more than many would have done, be kind to yourself.

Pearl69 · 11/09/2025 16:53

Seeing as lots of drivers don’t bother, you were brave and compassionate enough to let the owner know and give them closure. It must feel awful but you ve done the right and decent thing.

Well done for stopping and not leaving the poor cat. It is awful for you but you did the right thing by letting the owner know. I've had a missing cat and it's awful worrying about what might have happened. Thankfully, mine was found after 8 weeks though.

Cherryblossom200 · 11/09/2025 17:05

I can’t stop crying, watching that poor cat die was just awful. And then breaking the news to the owner 😭 I think they probably hate me.

I know exactly how i would feel if I was in your shoes. I still really terrible about hitting a rabbit years ago.
You did all the right things. Unfortunately these things happen. Sympathies to you, as well as the cat and it's family ❤️

I'm so sorry - awful for the cat, but awful for you too. Thank you for stopping and contacting the owner. A lot of drivers wouldn't have bothered. The owners are bound to be upset, but it's a risk you have to accept when you let your cat out, and after the initial shock, they will be grateful to you for staying with their cat and contacting them. As someone who had two cats, one of whom was run over and the other lived to a ripe old age, I wouldn't hate you. I would thank you for calling me, for staying with the cat and for giving him as much dignity as possible.
This was not your fault. Cats have zero road sense sometimes.

GingerPaste · 11/09/2025 17:25

Awwww, so sorry you had to go through this. Thinking of you… xx

MissDoubleU · 11/09/2025 17:27

I’m so sorry, this was so heartbreaking and you did everything you could. The owners have no grounds to hate you. If you’re going to let an animal run around freely you’re going to have to accept the risk of it being hit by a car. Sadly my local FB group is constantly posting about run over cats.

Go easy on yourself, get yourself a little treat and give yourself some time to unwind. You’ve handled it exceptionally well

Good for you for taking kitty to its owner and facing up to knocking them over. It was an accident and these things happen. I would be very upset if this happened to my cat - obvs! But if the driver who hit her brought her back to me, and was upset, and full of sympathy, it would make the situation easier to bear. Still very painful, but not as devastating as her being knocked over and left to die alone. 😢

Look after yourself @Cherryblossom200 You didn't do it on purpose. Flowers

I saw a taxi kill my dcat. He didn't even stop. The owner knows you are a caring compassionate person...

Poor you. I would be really upset myself . I once hit a fox that ran in front of my car and it was awful.

my uncle once hit a cat that decided to leap off a wall right at the moment he drove past. Obviously very upsetting, made worse by the fact he’s a vet and it was once of his clients. That was an immensely awkward and upsetting call.

nothing you can do. It wasn’t deliberate and sadly things like this happen. The fact you called and did the right thing shows you did everything you could. What else could you have done? If it were my cat I’d be sad but wouldn’t hate you

james5555 · 27/02/2026 10:25

I’m so sorry you went through that. It was a pure accident, and you did everything right by stopping and contacting the owner — that shows you have a kind heart. Please don’t blame yourself. The fact that you stayed with the cat says a lot about you. Be gentle with yourself ❤️
