Does anyone’s child keep ants?

My son is obsessed with growing his own ant colony. This initially sounded like a terrible idea but he is persuasive and has done so much research and I’m starting to come around.
His birthday is later this year so I’m genuinely considering it. Am I mad?

Looks cheap and you can get a self contained ant colony unit. Certainly less planning and commitment required compared to something like a dog or cat which they might lose interest in and could cost a fortune.

Don't know how you deal with the breeding. I suppose you just put it outside at that time of year with the lid off.

I assume the whole thing is sealed apart from air so the things can't get out and forage through your house.

DS had one. It was well made and didn't take up too much space. It was no particular hassle and quite interesting watching it develop.

Eventually we tipped them out into the garden - no doubt triggering an ant war.

Oooh which one did you get? How long before he lost interest? And no escapees?

This is the one we had. It is plastic and clips together securely so even if it got knocked the ants couldn't get out.

There are a lot of funky looking new designs available now though. I'm almost tempted to get another one, just for me! DH would think I'm mad though, we have ants nests all over our garden...
