Cat kidney failure

We brought our nearly 3 year old cat to the vet today as he hadn't been eating his food, just small amounts here and there. I thought it might be his teeth as he was licking the juice from his wet food. I noticed he had definitely lost weight also and was lethargic. Vet told us he is severely anemic and could have kidney failure. He had lost 25 percent of his body weight from last year. I am in total shock and feel such awful guilt. How did i not notice it was so bad...He got bloods done to see what's going on but apparently there isn't much that can be done and looking like he will have to be put down. I am so devastated. Has anyone experienced same with their cat? He was absolutely fine but just the past few days where he seemed to have deteriorated quickly.

Hello - yes we also lost our three year old boy to kidney failure earlier this year. It was different in that we knew he had CKD, but the end was still very quick and unexpected. It really is best if you let him go peacefully - I'm so sorry.

I'm so sorry to hear about your cat. So young too 😪

I went through it with two of mine in the past, lots & lots of tests, special food, (rinse & repeat) etc etc

Took too long to let the first one go, probably longer than I should have for the second one, but not as long as the first one...

If I was ever in that position again
i hope I'd be stronger & do the right thing for them sooner. But at the time I was bereaved and just couldn't.

I slightly blame the vets for the first one because their 'advice' was always, test & wait to see, change her diet & wait & see... not sure if that was ££ driven or genuinely wanting to 'save' her?!

She'd been with me through a hell of lot & I just couldn't let her go, especially when the vet just jept saying 'try...' 😪.

Many years on I still miss her 💕 & out boy too!

This is my first pet so its all new territory but yes i dont want him to suffer. The vet said keep offering him a range of different foods to see if he eats and then bloods results will be on Monday but if he really deteriorates over weekend to go to emergency vet. He has hidden under the bed upstairs all day not coming out at all but maybe that's after being at the vets. He is a very anxious cat. I don't want to lose him though, was not prepared for it at all....it's such a shock. He is the best cat ever. He is so affectionate would come for a cuddle on my lap every night without fail. Now he's so weak its just so sad...
