Guinea pig neutering

I have 2 male guinea pigs. Had them a year from when they were about 4months old. I got them from different breeders, but they assure me they'd be ok as they were young. Last year they were fine together, but this year one is beating the other up. We've has 2 trips to the vet - first time ended upon abs and anti-inflammatories, 2nd time was ok.

Vet suggested possibility of the aggressive one neutered as it may help his behaviour. However I've read that it often doesn't help. Anyone got any advice?

Just discovered massive ear cut and wound on his back so I've separated them for now.

Don't know how effective it is. Also, risks from anasthetic, obv. One of my gps had 2 anasthetics and was fine though.
Sorry for your problem - this happened to my 2 males and we had to seperate them.

at your lovely pets. Haven't had a gp for a few years now and am getting tempted!

I have just got a new cage - double with ramp, but I can fold the ramp up to make seperate cages, which I'll do this evening. I haven't investigated the wound properly yet as dd1 was getting very upset.

When I went to the vet the second time she told me off and said the problem would be solved if I put a little house in the cage so one could get away to its own space. I've done that, but the bully one just shoves the other out and then beats him up.

We had the same problem a few years ago with ours. We ended up separating them as you have. After a year apart, we re-introduced them for an hour or two at a time in an outside run and by the time they were four they were together again. I decided it was an 'adolescent/hormone' problem and as they matured it settled down.
Best of luck with yours.

Flip - wound was huge. Going back tomorrow for stitches under anaesthetic. £150 for drugs, appointments and stitches

I'll try reintroducing when they're older. Not going to neuter - decided on separation. Injured guinea looking a little happier after drugs and warm towel!
