I think their mum does it doesn't she? When I got my kitten she was a month old and I was told the mum cat had trained her kittens.

You'll find that the mother cat will stop cleaning the kittens herself at some point, and you'll find puddles on the floor, usually in corners. They will watch the mother use a litter tray, but if she always goes out, you will have to help them!

Use a litter that will feel comfortable on their paws; when you spot an accident, sprinkle some litter on it, or use a tissue to mop up, and place this in the tray. Place the kittens on the tray to have a good sniff and explore, and keep the tray in the same place in the room. If you see a kitten crouching, pop it on the tray, and hopefully it will associate it's need with the smell and go for you. Kittens will come and watch each other, and keep going to the tray.

Have two trays available so that each can be washed in turn daily, using only water and no cleaning agents-you don't want to interfere with the scent- if it doesn't smell right the kittens may go elsewhere! Same is possible if one tray is in use by a kitten, another may go elsewhere if there is no other tray. They do learn incredibly quickly!
