Springer Spaniel - English Setter mix. Should we??

My friend has a springer spaniel, she has had herself some action with an amorous english setter that found an open door to the house during Easter.

Pups expected soon. So, how good would this be for a family dog? We are quite an active family, walks, cycling, outings, etc.

Only thing is, I am concerned for allergies, so must think carefully.

My friend had a comment that this mix would be perfect as a hunting dog, how is a hunting dog as a family dog?

these will be gorgeous , fantastic family dogs ,would make excellent hunting dogs in a hunt point retrieve sense with all the right training but labradors make excellent 'hunting' dogs too and millions of families have them as pets . As for allergies ,well if you or your kids are allergic to dogs then you will be allergic to this type too . I will just say that these will be very 'busy' dogs and will need lots of stimulation as well as exercise.

i imagine knowing springers that they will be very hyper - depends on if you can deal with that for the first 2+ yrsa until they calm down and mature a bit.

I have a friend with this mix and they are gorgeous! Really friendly - bit mad but then so is she

QuintessentialShadows · 13/05/2008 21:15

Oh gosh, it sounds exactly like the dog for us! I now picture something, happy, mad, active.... And as we live in the middle of nearly nowhere, with the sea and the mountains, plenty of opportunity to roam wild with us when out cycling, trekking, picking berries in the mountains....

As for hunting, my father has a room full of trophies, he was doing skiing and shooting as a sport.... He had an English setter.

We have had three English Setters who have been lovely and my family used to breed springers. I would imagine that the laid back (in the house) nature of the Setter should combine nicely with the more bidable nature of the springer - but it could go the other way and you could end up with a hyper dog who takes no notice! Bound to be a fun combination and cute puppies
