Cat and birds

Does anyone have any recommendations about how to stop a cat killing birds?
I have tried (increasingly loud) bells on collar & a bird safe collar without success. I play with him indoors with a laser pointer but he shows little interest. Am thinking of keeping him indoors in April/May and June but I know that will be very difficult.

Plenty of food worked with one we had. Fresh wet food 4/5 times a day and she gave up hunting
