Thinking very seriously about this. Have talked it over with dts, emphasising we'd only have him until he/she was 1 year old.

I just wanted to know if anyone had any experience and the pros and cons of it.

Cheers m'dears.

I'm not but I know a couple who did it for years. The biggest downside is getting to know the dogs and then having to hand them over BUT, apparently, you do get used to this aspect and you know that they are going to a very good and very necessary home.

Funny, I never asked what happened to the puppies who didn't 'pass' the training. Hmmmm....

I have a friend who does this. SHe loves it but does say it's difficult to hand over the dogs when the time comes. SHe has had a few that don't pass the training but they are found good homes and she has actually kept one where this happens.

Oh here we go. Chez TwoIfBySea, the house full of dogs that didn't make the grade!

It was the part I felt I could cope with. Saying goodbye after a year. Just because of where they are going and what they will be doing.

Last year when ex-dh walked out he took our dog with him, then, without telling me he was going to do so, he rehomed him. I couldn't believe it as we had a GSD, a fantastic dog he was. Dts were devastated but I've spoken to them quite a bit about this, emphasising the fact he/she would go after a year and they seem quite happy with this. Now if Guide Dogs do dalmatians we would have a problem as dts1 wants one badly but otherwise they are sensible boys, they know the pup would have a job to do.
