Kitten/cat personalities

Hello!

Longtime car owner, I normally always have two cats a boy and a girl. Last week we lost our gorgeous boy cat who was 14. I'm devastated as he was the friendliest cat I've ever owned, he was my DD's best friend and irreplaceable.

My other cat who is 18 is really aloof, not particularly friendly but still lovely.

I've promised my DD I will get her a kitten as she has never experienced having one, although I will be supervising! She's nearly 10 so mature enough for the responsibility.

We won't be ready until mid Feb. But I'm starting to look now.

We'd like a friendly kitten or kittens (rescue centre's onto rehome kittens in twos) who love to cuddle/sit on your lap and just be around us.

I know to avoid the shy kittens, but any other tips for finding the right kittens personality wise?

It’s hard to determine really. Our lovely outgoing friendly kitten is a lovely boy but not a lap cat, he will sit next to you with his fur very slightly touching but that’s the best we can get!

Our very shy kitten is still quite a shy boy to everyone apart from us- he meows at me repeatedly if he hasn’t had a very recent cuddle and would happily sleep on my knee all day.

Having littermates has been lovely and I would never get a solo cat again after having these two but it did take us longer to bond as they had each other to cuddle with.

Sorry to hear about your boy❤️

Unfortunately as you know cats have their own personalities and it's hard to know if they are going to be lap cats. From experience though I've found that boys are a lot more loving than girls. Also I found that tabby cats and ginger cats seem to be more affectionate (I've had 2 of each) although I may have just been lucky.

I was thinking of a ginger cat next for us and I do want to wait for a boy. I think they definitely are more affectionate.

I have an 18 year old cat, I'm not sure how many years she got left. I was thinking of rehoming 1 kitten, but the rescue centres only rehome in 2's. I'm not sure if I'm crazy have 3 cats 🤣 I think we will be named the crazy cat house!

I'm going to buy one of those cat backpacks so we can train the cat to go hiking with us! So I'd like a chilled, happy cuddly cat!

Maine coon, or Maine coon mix have that personality so are a safe bet.

I’d definitely go for a pair to save your 18 year old from being run ragged.

If you go to a rescue where cats & kittens are fostered in volunteers’ homes, they should be able to what they’re like to live with.

Cherryblossom200 · 14/01/2025 20:56

Yep I think I'll end up getting a pair. My daughter will have plenty of energy to play, my house is going to be crazy 🤣

It's helping me get through this, because tbh I'm still in shock at losing my boy. Last week was beyond traumatic as it was unexpected, I still can't quite believe he has gone.

We have 3 cats, when we got them the intention was to get 2 the grey and ginger boys but when we went to look at them their sister claimed my daughter as her person. Every time she put her down she kept crawling back on to my daughter’s lap. I thought we would be mad to have 3 but 5 years later and they are wonderful. The little girl kitten is still completely attached to my daughter and has complete disdain for anyone else!
I vote get 2 kittens!

Cherryblossom200 · 14/01/2025 21:02

Ok will get two kitten. But I want a boy and girl. I'd like to find a rescue litter and will watch to see which kittens gravitate towards us. I'm less fussed about their looks. My boy cat was an ugly little kitten but grew into his looks and bit. But his personality won me over, he was fab x

Ginger female - so friendly but she was hand reared and we got her at 8 weeks, she's genuinely the nicest cat I've ever known although she's shy around strangers (which is good as no one has been able to lure her away). Loves to sit on your knee, be lifted and cuddled.

Black female - absolute witch, satan incarnate. Lovable but will bite and scrab for fun. Will sit on your knee but not a fan of being lifted. Very vocal, announces herself every time she enters the room, she has the funniest personality of all the cats.

Tuxedo semi long haired female - aloof, loves to be petted and will sit on your knee but hates being lifted too (we call her bagpipes). We think she's semi wild. Her and ginger female are best pals and hate the other cats together as a team.

Ginger male - greedy. Friendly but an absolute hoe bag and disappears for days (I think he also owns a neighbour up the street). Will lie on you, loves pets and belly rubs.

Tabby male - see above, he's slightly more aloof but he loves our dog, he thinks he is a dog I suspect.

Cats are all so different, I do think ginger female is the friendliest because she was hand reared and saw us as her cat mum.

We've just rescued these two kittens, a brother and sister 🤗 both are 8 weeks old and ready for us to take home in about 3 weeks after their 2nd jabs.
We are so happy. The girl is the tricolour who my daughter has named Lottie.

The boy will be mine, I like silly character names. I was thinking, Bob, Bertie, Milo or Nate. Thoughts? It's the little ginger boy xx

They are so cute ! When do you get them, I like the name milo x

Cherryblossom200 · 29/01/2025 21:24

We collect them in just under two weeks. These are photos from last weekend.

In the end we decided that the ginger boy will be called Peanut and the tricolour girl my daughter decided would be called Lottie. I would have loved Pickle, as Peanut and Pickle would have been so funny! But they are my daughter's cats so she gets to choose 😊

We love them already! And really happy they are from a rescue x
