Hip replacement in dog

Our 4yo dog is being x-rayed on Friday to work out the severity of her hips but the vet is talking about replacing both hip joints.

I have been googling as you do and see this 90-95% success rate being thrown around, but I'm not seeing much in the way of people whose dogs have gone through the surgery talking about it. If our girl needs it, what can we expect? Does it really only take a few months to recover? Is it fair to her to put her through it? The alternative is a lifetime of medication as it gets worse which also seems unfair to me.

Also, we have two youngish kids at home, how can we keep doggo comfortable despite the kids? Do we bring back a crate so she has a safe space during recovery? She refuses to use a dog bed but I'm open to trying another brand if anybody has a good recommendation? I'm tempted to buy her a single mattress at this point as she will rest on the kids beds given a chance! (overnight once the kids have joined us!)

@Sturnidae There is 'The doghouse' board - if you ask MNHQ to move this there, or if you repost this there, I'm fairly sure you'll get helpful advice/suggestions.
I have no direct experience of dog hip replacements so won't make suggestions about that. I do have experience of dogs and kids, and would certainly want to make sure she can be separate from the kids!
Hope everything turns out well for you all, best of luck.
