Should I get a kitten?! HELP

Hi everyone 😊

Me and my fiancé bought our first house in June. We have settled in and so has our little 1 year old sausage dog.

Now that we have settled, I have seriously been debating getting a kitten. I absolutely love cats and I miss having one (my parents have 3 cats who we lived with up until we moved in June)

I seriously can't decide what to do. All of our furniture is brand new, the house is looking lovely and our dog is out of the 'puppy stage' where he destroys everything. Part of me doesn't want to ruin the peace we have now, I don't want to think "what have I done!!" One of the rescues near me has a lovely little kitten there looking for a home.

Opinions and advice welcome please, what do you all think?

Get 2.

Yes to getting 2 rather than 1, if only so they play with each other instead of with your dachshund.

But you’re then going to have 2 adorable little psychos destroying everything, and kittens can get higher up than puppies can.

I have two who are litter-mates and the best things ever. Admittedly I didn't have them from kittens as they are rescues but 2 cats that match are even better than 2 brought together into a household.

Get 2.

Absolutely, they'll play together or as a 3 with doggo 🐶

Local rescues are likely to have litters & want them to be homed in pairs. Or in threes even.

100% get the kitten! They will add so much love and joy and fun to your life. Yes, there are practicalities to consider but they can all be worked out. Giving a loving home to an animal that needs one is invaluable.

I have two littermates - boy-girl and if I'd do it again I'd just get one. They're not pals at all now!

DoTheRoary · 09/09/2024 22:28

Oh yes do! We had kittens and they didn't destroy anything. They're gorgeous and once you've got past the having to keep them indoors while they adjust they're hardly any trouble but give so much in return!

The answer to ‘should I get a kitten?’ is always yes.

I had my girl from 14 weeks. She has never destroyed anything. No scratching, chewing or toileting on anything.

People will say you need two but my girl came was a singleton adoption and it’s not been a problem. Baby photo for cat tax.

You have to get 2. Much easier and kinder. We got a pair in june. Bit of scratched off wallpaper is all. They are very good at using the scratching post and we are lucky enough to live away from main roads so they freely go in and out of the cat flap. Cats are Soooo easy compared to puppies!

FoxtrotOscarKindaDay · 09/09/2024 22:36

Definitely get a pair and get them from a rescue. Rescues are over run with kittens right now. If you can, adopt a slightly older pair especially if you have a dog as you will be matched with cats that are dog tested.
