Getting a kitten

What should I know/ consider before getting a kitten? 2 adults and 2 older toddlers in the house. I had cats in my childhood.

Pick it well

Don't get kittens with toddlers, adopt a pair of older cats that are used to small children.

I would wait until your youngest is 5 tbh

Please don't get a kitten if you have a toddler. Most rescues recommend placing them in households with older children.

A friend's cat was from the RSPCA and had been taken there as a kitten because she'd bitten the face of a toddler who was teasing/grabbing/cornering her. The cat spent 6 months in the rescue home because of that situation. Plus the toddler likely very distressed of course.

Find a rescue where the volunteers foster the cats in their homes & they’ll be more able to match you up with a suitable one.

Yes to not getting kittens with toddlers. Also you’ll want plenty of high surfaces where a cat can get away from them.

Toddlers (age 1-3 ish?) Shouldn't be around kittens IMO, kittens have sharp teeth and claws and easily break a leg if dropped etc. I'd wait until the kids are older.

We got our cat when DD was 1 and she was 10 weeks and it was fine. We had to teach her to be kind to the kitten. We’ve just got another and our cat is 10 now.

Toddlers are 3 & 4, I guess not really toddlers anymore. They are used to having cats around the house as we look after next doors often. Thanks for all the advice :)

I agree to get two then they have a play buddy of their own species. Mine play and cuddle together and I feel less bad when I have to leave them.

Get two if you're getting them, but I agree toddlers are really not good news for cats.

Like I said I think there is no issue with toddlers and kittens. Just make sure you supervise which it sounds like you will
