Just had my dog neutered, this is all new to me as the last male dog I had was a rescue so already neutered, and I thought I'd ask on mumsnet so I don't look stupid in front of my vet. My dog was neutered last wednesday and is due to go back in on saturday to have his stitches out. Its all healing well, but it still looks like he has one testicle and his scrotum is very much still there. Wouldn't both testes normally be removed, is there something else it could be? And what happens to the scrotum? Does it just shrink? Ta!

maybe they just snip the tubes they like to with men - rather than removing the whole testicle ? I have never thought about it before because we have always had females - but we have a male puppy now so will find out in a few months time.

How old is yours by the way ?

I would query the testicle but our dog still has a small sac 4 years on.

just been reading up about it - they do remove the testicle - so maybe it is just fluid build up ? Does it look red ? If not it is probably fine.

they remove the inside bit but leave the actual sac which in time will shrink and disappear. my dig had a little flat sac that was there for about a couple of years. the swelling is probably just the results of the operation or maybe an infection so just ask about the swelling but if it is not weeping it should be ok.

Thanks, I was pretty sure they removed the testicles as otherwise his hormone levels wouldn't drop, and he'll still hassle girl dogs! Throckenholt he's 13mths old, we wanted to wait until he was over 12mths.
At first it did look just like a flat sack, but it does look like there is something in there. In fact....eurghh...it does feel like a testicle, sorry if thats TMI but thought I should check. The area looks fine though, no weeping, pinkness or tenderness. I'll keep an eye on it and ask the vet on Saturday.

They will have removed both testes yes. Where the rest of the tissue attaches to them it is tied off to stop bleeding. Where those internal stitches are sometimes get a bit reactive and swell up for a short period of time. This can be completely normal and nothing to worry about. In time it will settle so no swellings there and over further time the scrotum will shrink away too. The vet should just check it however to be on the safe side, but it does sound totally normal to me from what you have said.

our neutered dog has still got a scrotum with something very shriveled inside . i thought that it was a vasectomy rather than a castration these days.

emiliadaniel · 21/04/2008 21:37

A neutered dog will definitely have been castrated and not vasectomised. Vasectomy is a more technically difficult procedure that is almost never performed on dogs, doesn't result in shrivelled testes and has far fewer benefits (only results in infertility). If the dog is mature at the time of castration, a certain amount of scrotal skin will remain. As beautifulgirls said, you sometimes get a reaction inside which can leave a thickening. Absolutely nothing to worry about though.

god the range of topics discussed on this site is amazing...............

Just to let you know, the vet said he must have had a small bleed which has caused the lump, but all is fine and it will go down over time, along with the scrotum!
