To not trust the vet (fees)

Booked our dog in for a dental & agreed to routine blood tests. Did a similar thing late last year with a specialist, came back clear Fast forward to the dental, vet calls & says they can't go ahead as her kidney function is below par. Okay, collected her, vet says to start her on early renal food (no medication required as not that bad) come back in a month. Go back today, vet starts talking about a urine sample as well as the bloods today, doubling the cost to £345- (already paid out over (£200-) I said let's wait to see what the bloods tell us as the food may have worked. Vet says I can fast track the bloods (again additional costs) & I said no hurry as we've waited a month already. Vet starts talking about medication which I queried, as vet said not necessary yet on last visit, again let's wait for the bloods. I then said maybe we should put the dental on hold (£1000-) & vet says, oh I think she will be okay for that. We can afford this & she's insured but something just feels 'off'. But, I don't want to put her at risk, I'm tied in on a health plan but tempted to get a second opinion. Can I do that & am I being unreasonable putting my suspicions before her health?

It does seem a little pushy, especially if she wasn't fit for the dental but she now miraculously is.

I took my elderly dog for a routine check up and the vet wanted to start her on regular injections for arthritis. I declined. She walks, climbs the stairs, jumps for dinner and gets on the sofa no problem. Vet said injections are expensive but the insurance will pay! Whole thing felt off. Get a second opinion.
