Looking for cute name for a male kitten we're getting next week. Also any tips on caring for them I've never owned a cat before - it's a house cat

Great thank you for letting me know I will definitely get him neutered. Glad I asked for advice now

I'm definitely of the mindset that a cat names itself, so when you get a cat, have it a few days and see what names come to you! I've had a Twiglet, an Oliver, an Octavia and a Wizzy Grin

I do agree however I'm not very creative so if there's suggestions at least there will be something

Thankyou for this advice it's really helpful! I wasn't actually planning on getting him neutered as he won't be going out, is this something that I should be considering? Also I am on maternity leave so I'm home all day everyday, plenty of time for him x

Definitely best to neuter. You'd never be able to keep him indoors - the mating instinct is very strong! Plus they tend to hump things and they can spray! Get him chipped too as there's a better chance of getting him back should he escape if he can be identified. I don't like collars on cats but he wouldn't have any need of one if he's indoors.

I see you're on maternity leave - be careful with kitty around your baby. Teach them to be gentle with the cat as they grow. Kittens can be a bit bitey and scratchy. They're not being vicious, just very playful, but they don't really learn to retract their claws until they're bigger.

Have fun! We need the cat tax paid when you get him lol!

Rambo, he may be cute now wait until he older.

(And you don't decide he's a House Cat - he will make that decision for himself!)

If he's used to being indoors as a kitten, he will be fine.

Depends what he looks like. But if I were to take on a new (male) kitten I'd call him Leo. Smile

Why is he a house cat? It's more common for rescue cats to be house cats (due to previous trauma/circumstance or illness/injury), but a young kitten should surely be able to go outside (once it's old enough/neutered, obviously). It's a bit cruel to keep a cat indoors its whole life without good reason.

I'd always go for a 'human' name. But I'd choose one with personal relevance- so if you're sports fans, call it after someone from your sport, or a member of a band if you have a favourite, etc.

Our cats were named after scientists when I was a child, so we had Ernest (Rutherford) and Ava (Lovelace).

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 05/08/2024 00:23

Ours is Louie - Hullabalouie is more apt - although we adopted him at 18 months. If he’s to be an indoor cat he will need a lot of playing to avoid him being bored. A bored cat is trouble!

Another vote for neutering. They can small a female in heat miles away and will head in a straight line ignoring traffic and anything else n the way.
