Dry eye in 3 year old dog

Hi our Westie girl has just been diagnosed with dry eye. She’s only three and I’ve just been told she has to have two different kinds of eye drops every day, so a total of five sets of eye drops per day. Apart from how daunting this is, what’s worrying me is just when her eyes started to get bad, she also got a urine infection, which was treated. We also got a new puppy at the same time. So I’m wondering if something could have caused the dry eyes… she’s also dropped half a kilo in the last three weeks, with no change to her (offered) diet.
has anyone else had experience with dry eye and was it linked with any other conditions/events?

Hi OP I've had 2 westies with dry eye. Both got it when older 9 and 12. The treatment saved their sight. Hycosan eye drops from any chemist (one in red bottle/labelling) was lovely and soothing between medication doses. Both dogs later went onto have cushings disease which is very common in dogs - excessive panting and drinking, caused by high levels of stress hormone fired off.

I'd ask for blood tests for general check of health and research cushings to keep an eye out for any symptoms.

Best of luck x

Hycosan eye gel is good for at night, I use it for my dry eyes, it lasts longer than the drops, just put a dot under the lower eyelid last thing at night, then massage the eyelid from the outside gently to distribute.
