I have a 14 Year old dog, she is a very much loved family pet.

Yesterday while grooming him, we found lots of mattered fur around his neck.

On further investigation we found that he had a hair bobble wrapped around his neck, its cut right into his skin almost all the way around his neck. My DD must have put it round him while play with him. It looks like it could have been there ages. I cannot believe it, he has been absolutey fine and still is. We removed it and the smell and gunk that came out was horrible, but it didnt seem to hurt him. We havent notice any smell of anything prior to grooming him it as though we must have catch something with comb.

We have no money to take him to the vets, we only have one very tight income as i cannot work due to diability. We are alway basically living out of our overdraft.

We have bathed it is a very mild salt water twice last night, and this morning it look alot better, but its still smell abit, alot of the cuts have started to heal and are alot less red, at the bottom of her next the bobble has cut in to her neck quite bad but it now look very clean and has started to close up. The smell i think is coming from whats left on his fur as its still quite matterd in parts.

Would a bath help? what should it do?

Please help me, its made me feel sick to type this and if got tears streaming down my face while im typeing. Ive staying up all night because i feel so sick. This dog ihas in the past been my life line and has help me through numerous episodes of depression.

The guilt im feeling for having no money is horrendous.

Please help.

ok. firstly, calm down. whereabouts in the country are you? is there a PDSA near you?

overdraft · 05/04/2008 11:18

Find a Blue Cross/ P.D.S.A and take him there and explain. He needs medical care.
Don't feel guilty.

ReallyNeedHelp · 05/04/2008 11:18

Yes there is a pdsa near us, but i dont thing we can go.

we dont get house benfit or council tax benefits.

we get full family tax credit working tax credits and get card for preciption and dental care.

if possible cut the matted hair out as close to the skin as possible. bathe him but not with perfumed products. salt solution in the wound is fine. then pat dry. you can buy powdered medication to sprinkle on. if it goes green and the smell worsens then you will have to take him to the vet. take care.

ReallyNeedHelp · 05/04/2008 11:26

Bethoo, would this powder be available from a pet shop?

id probably cut away the fur and keep the sore area clean with salt water to try to stop infection. Its good that it seems to be clearing up and as long as it keeps getting better over the next few days, doesnt get very red and inflamed or start oozing then your dog should be ok.
If it does look as if its getting worse or he starts to get unwell then PDSA is probably your best bet. They will usually treat sick animals if you take prof of benefits and only ask for a donation of what you can afford in return
Depending on the age of DD you could get her involved with looking after your dogs wound so that hopefully it wont hapen again

bethoo · 05/04/2008 11:26

yes i think you can

fiodyl · 05/04/2008 11:31

if ou are on full tax credits then i would have thought you would be recieving at least some CTB at least esp as you have a disability premium??

(Im no expert I only worked at the jobcentre for 10 years )

ReallyNeedHelp · 05/04/2008 11:40

sorry i dont know what CTB is.

When i said diability its my DC disability not mine, we have claimed for DLA but we have not yet heard back.

We dont get any benefits other then the tax credits.

DH is self employed and earns around 12k (after taxes ect).

I would ring your local PDSA and chat to them now, be honest with them and see what they say

fiodyl · 05/04/2008 11:54

sorry CTB=Council Tax Benefit

I agree with special though if u really think he needs to see someone id ring/ explain situation and see what they say.
If they say u may have to pay towards the costs(paying at the PDSA is still cheaper than a private vet)they may allow you to pay the full cost in instalments

Thanks for all your replys, ive been and had a chat with the man in the pet shop (i didnt go into full detail) he has recommended some wound powder.

I will see how he goes over the next couple of days.

Hubby has just come back from work and he agrees that it look alot better than last night. I think that becase he has alot of excess skin around his lower neck the under seems much worse.

fiodyl - how would i find out if we are entitiled to CTB ?.

Try the PDSA, even if it looks better, a wound like that could easily get infected and become serious.

I would also make sure you're DD sees the wound, please don't sugarcoat it, she needs to see what she has done so hopefully it will shock her into not doing stupid things again.

I hope you're dog is OK.

ReallyNeedHelp · 06/04/2008 14:24

Hi countrygirl,

I have explained to DD2 that she is not allowed to mess with dog and that she need to very carefull with him at the moment because he has poorly neck because she put a hair bobble around his neck.

But i will not be showing her the wound as she is just 2, she didnt really understand how a bobble could have made the dog neck poorly.

It my own fault i should have been supervising her more closely.

We have applied for a loan, and have been accepted. The loan company will transfer the fund more or less straight away should we. We are going to see how he is in the morning, its healing really well it no longer smells and has started to scab over.

God know how we are going to afford the loan repayments though.

everyone recommends www.entitledto.co.uk o fnout wot y entitled to. I dunno how accurate they are but it would give u a good indication of whether its worth your time filling in the load of forms to apply

CountryGirl2007 · 07/04/2008 19:33

Would it be possible to post a picture of the wound? I think he really needs to go to the vet ASAP. It really is cruel to leave a dog with such a serious injury untreated even if you do care for him and I understand money can be an issue. Have you tried the PDSA yet? I'm sure they would help you considering the injury.

CountryGirl2007 · 07/04/2008 19:34

also, forgot to ask, how deep is the wound? or is it superficial?

how is your dog now?

AnAngelWithin · 28/04/2008 10:06

is your dog ok now?

AnAngelWithin · 20/06/2008 09:44

still wondering what happend and if the dog is ok??

sullysmum · 20/06/2008 22:39

I would bathe the area in warm/hot salty water quite frequently.
The PDSA usually will only treat if you are on certain benefits, (im with them) think its housing benefit and council tax benefit but you could phone a vets for advice.

sullysmum · 27/06/2008 16:02

Any update?
