Cat microchip in old owners details

They didn’t have the details and we’re not in contact now. They didn’t have it with his paperwork.

Can I take my cat to a vet to be scanned and they’ll give me the number? I feel like they won’t because technically I could have stolen my cat?

Maybe if the vet scans the chip the old owner's details will come up and you can contact them.

Surely the details will come up when he's scanned and then you can contact them to get it changed? I assume this is a private rehoming?
