Cats always getting killed on the roads

On Facebook not a week goes by without someone saying 'have you seen my cat' or 'cat missing or there is a dead /dying cat on the road.' Isn't it about time we stopped allowing cats to roam free and for their own safety either keep them in the garden with secure fencing, keep them indoors or don't keep a cat at all.
It's cruel, we don't allow dogs out on the road so why do we allow cats? If you love your cat keep them safe.

We've had cats since kittens. I wanted them to be house cats that we walked, however, despite introducing leashes from 12weeks, they never got used to them and it seemed cruel.

The compromise is that they do not go out at night - this massively reduces the risk of them being run over and between the two of them they've never successfully hunted anything. They've both been neutered so even when they are out they don't roam far and we live on a quiet estate.

We also don't let them out in very poor weather.

Both seem happy and content, the female cat is practically a house cat anyway.
