New puppy- pooping?

Hello,
We’ve brought home our first puppy earlier today. He’s been a superstar so far, had a few drinks of water, a bit of food, lots of playing, three wees but no pooping yet. He’s a Labrador and is 9 weeks old. We just took him outside into the garden to see if that might help but it’s lashing down so he was out less than a minute.

I think I might be the pet equivalent of anxious first time mum but how often should he poop? I’d envisaged him being on a similar pooping schedule to my husband. Searching the internet ranges from 1-5 a day and is making me worry about future targeted adverts, so please seasoned pet owners of mumsnet please share your wisdom. At what point do I need to worry? Or am I fussing about nothing.

Thanks.

Mine went after meals, almost immediately. He probably needs to settle down if you only got him today. You need to take him straight out after his supper and mooch round, in the rain, until he performs. It's one of the joys of winter puppies - all four of mine were born this time of year.

Thanks for the advice. We’ll take him out and again after his next feed. It’s crazy weather here and so dark we felt very mean but you’re right it’s part and parcel of being a autumn/winter puppy.

Much better that he gets used to going out than used to toileting in the house Wink

Have you got some warm boots that are east to fry on and a warm, waterproof coat? We've got a small torch that we keep near the back door for spoofing the poops 💩

Thank you, he’s done much better today and has pooped and had a wee outside so far. He seems to have quite enjoyed a sniff around too. I’ve got my garden birkies by the door so I’m ready to go. He’s our first puppy so I am a little anxious and want him to get off to a good start.

Take him outside as soon as he’s finished eating, you might be waiting a little while but they’ll usually go then. I can guarantee if you don’t wait long enough, as soon as you come inside they’ll poop on the floor!

Thanks for the advice. We have been doing just that and he is doing well.
Feel like I did as a new mum all over again worrying about him 😆
