Put Greyhound down before time

I had to put my greyhound down recently due to him suffering with kidney issues. He was only 7 years old. We have been to the vets many of times and found out due to rescuing him from racing his kidneys would get worse and worse over time.

We went through two years of waking up every night , keeping him in one room as had to guard him as even though we had the best quality food he was not getting the nutrients out of the food and kept managing to get hold of things he shouldn't of. This was making him very ill every other month or so. We had to muzzle him when in the garden as he would eat his own poop. Once or twice a night we were waking up.

This was making him have a poor quality of life and causing issues between me and my wife. He was a little before his time and it has absolutely crushed us to let him go but the vets told us we done everything we can and gave him a good home. It was 50/50 poor quality of life for both the dog and us and also relief 50/50

It just feels the second we done it that we killed him and just want him back 😭 we are thinking with our hearts. We had many occasions we could if stopped and turned around but we didn't. The vet showed us his kidney levels and said it's the pain you have to go through now that the dog don't have to later.

Just wanted to see if anyone else has had to make that hard decision to put a dog down before it's time due to given each other poor quality of life.

'This was making him have a poor quality of life'

There is your answer. You put him first even though it was so distressing for you to let him go.

You and your wife can take comfort that your decision was the right one for him.

I was reading your description thinking "this is no quality of life, let the poor dog go", and then read that you had. You did the right thing. Maybe not the right thing for you, but the right thing for the dog.

Yes, I've done this, and I was completely and utterly consumed with guilt and regret. But now, I see what I saw when I made the decision, he didn't have a good life and it is kinder.

My vet says better a week too soon than a day too late. Bloody hard though.

You did exactly what I'd do. Sending hugs Flowers

I’m sorry for your loss.
You sound like you did everything you could for him for the last two years. He would have known you loved him and cared for him after him being a rescue. I’m sure he had a lovely life with you.
You made a really difficult decision for him.

I'm not sure why you think you had him pts before his time. That was his time and you absolutely did right by him for noticing that.

It sounds like it was time, all round. Yes, I do know what you mean (we had to make the tough decision for our old boy last year, it's not always a clear cut moment or just one factor).

Be kind to each other, you did your best for him, it must have been a very tough couple of years. Flowers

You were trusted with his little life and did what was in his best interest ❤️

You were really really brave and I applaud you. It's ok to miss him dreadfully.

I did this with a rabbit (I know it's not the same as a dog esp a greyhound I had one) who went downhill really fast at the start of lockdown in 2020. It was a scary and chaotic time. I was really scared I wouldn't be able to even see a vet if I left it any longer. He might have got better I will never know. I couldn't even stay with him. It was shit.
It haunts me a bit. I do understand how you feel but you did what you felt was right x
