Found my cat dead

Hello, this morning I found my 14 year old cat dead and I am devastated. It was very sudden. She has always been a very healthy cat and I saw her 1 hour before I found her.

I found her in the garden, she was full of saliva and mouth open. I know no one can give me a definite answer but just wondering if anyone has been through anything similar and knew their cause of death?

I am so sorry, that must have been such a shock. I have no idea what the cause could be but 14 is a very good age for a cat.

I hate to come across all practical, and I say this as a cat owner, but have you considered taking her to the vets for a post mortem?
For example, if she was poisoned or bitten by something, other animals & pets could be affected.

I'm so sorry OP. A quick Google shows that fluid in the mouth can be stomach fluid coming up after death. Perhaps talk to your vet and see if they can make suggestions.

Is there any blood in her mouth or nose? You could ask your vet to check her over if you wanted an idea of what had likely happened. I’ve had a cat drop down dead after showing no no previous symptoms - slightly younger than yours. He did have a little trickle of blood from his nose and I got told mostly likely a ruptured hemorrhage and/or heart attack.
It is unlikely to be poison as they are usually unwell in themselves first. Cats can move after being hit by a car but you would usually see some physical sign that they’d been hit.

So sorry OP. I too would contact my vet. I would imagine it was like with humans who pass away suddenly with a heart attack but there is also the possibility of poisoning.

That's so sad, but at least you found her and not left wondering why she hasn't come home. If she had ne prior signs of sickness or injury I'd assume she ingested a poisonous plant either in your garden or a neighbours.

So sorry OP that must have been a huge shock. I would question possibly a seizure as that will often make people/animals salivate. Whatever it was it sounds completely sudden and more than likely that she didn't know anything about it. Big hugs x

So very sorry for your loss OP.

With drooling just before death I also had this experience with one of my cats. He was a very old boy, nearly 20, and one day I noticed he was hardly moving and drooling a lot. I rushed him to the vet as my first thought was he had been poisoned somehow, either by eating something, or licking it off his fur, because I knew that poisoning, or eating something that upsets their stomach, does cause cats to drool.

However, at the vets they explained he was just very old, and his body was shutting down, and that was why he was drooling. He died while still at the vets, but they helped him with that so he didn't have any pain.

It is awful for you to experience this, and to not have a definitive answer. As a pp has said, you could pay for an autopsy, but I don't know how much that would cost. I suspect it will be quite expensive.

I am so sorry, it is very hard to lose a loved cat in such a sudden way.
