Help is my pup stupid or has it just not learnt yet???

We got a 4 month old lhasa apso female pup on Monday.

She's not house trained yet but the majority of the time she is going on the newspaper we have left out for her. But she doesn't seem to understand that she should be doing her business when she is out for a walk. No matter how long a walk i have taken her she has only done a poo twice and the rest of the time she does nothing at all and then comes back in and does it on the newspaper within the space of 5 mins!!!

Is she just extremely stupid or will she eventually learn??

Another thing she stops and smell where other dogs have wee'ed but thats it do dogs not usually have a wee there to sort of mark that they have been there too??

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

Have you got a garden? Mine two don't ever go when on a lead. I if I lead walk them for the whole of their walk then they wait till they are home!

Yeah we have got a garden but she is the same with that u can leave her out for ages and she will do it when she comes back in on the newspaper or some place else around the house!!

have you tried putting the newspaper in the garden? Weigh it down with some stones, get her used to going in the garden then slowly remove the amount of paper out there. Some dogs never do go outside of their own area though.

I dont think dogs in general like going to the toilet whilst on a lead

I concur with moving the paper gradually outside

you can also get a spray which attracts them to it

I'd agree with putting the paper outside and giving her loads of praise when she does it there. She won't start sent marking where other dogs have been until she's older and more terretorial, I think around 9mths? My pup didn't really go on a lead until he was 5-6mths old, but we gave him alot of praise when he did.

She's not stupid at all. She has been taught to use the paper so that is what she does. Put some paper outside, and if you can start to sprinkle some of her wee off the paper on the grassy areas you would like her to use to help her get the scent there a little bit. Little by little she will get the idea and heap the praise on when she gets it right.

She seems to starting to get a bit of a hang of it she is doing poos outside but still weeing on the paper inside.

Trying to keep her downstairs because whenever she goes upstairs she is doing her business. Not sure if its got something to do with the cat being up there most of the time. Sort of making sure the cat knows she is there maybe.

Still no toilet on a lead though but will just keep persevering and hopefully we will get there
