Young cat had a front leg amputated today

My young year old girl disappeared on Wednesday and I found her under a bush in the front garden this morning with a mangled front leg.

Took her straight up the vets and they've had to amputate this afternoon. She's apparently recovered well from the surgery and will hopefully be coming home in the next couple of days.

Has anyone ever had a cat who has lost a front leg? I've found plenty of tales about cats who've lost a back one but very little on front ones?

Just wondering how we can help her get used to life on 3 legs and if there's anything which will make her life easier.

Our cat only has three legs, has always coped really well, and does everything a cat can do! He’s now nearly 15 though, so is beginning to slow down a little.

Oh how awful but I'm so glad that you found her.

How is she now?

She is amazing! Getting around perfectly happily including jumping up onto the sofa and using the litter tray with no problems (my main concern was how she was going to bury stuff in her tray as she's always been very particular but she's worked out how to balance and use her remaining paw already!)

Vets have done a beautiful job and her scar is really neat and tidy.

Still on house arrest and will be for the foreseeable future but is eating well and enjoying cuddles. Can't believe how quickly she has adapted!

Growing up my family had a cat with a missing front leg. She was a very fluffy, long haired, beautiful thing & often people didn't always notice that she was missing a leg. It never held her back - She could climb fences, walls (often slept in the sun on the garage roof). She was a very good hunter too.
Cat lived to be almost 18 years old.
Wishing your lovely cat a long, happy, healthy life. x

Bit different but my cat had to have her tail amputated. She copes amazingly. I'm sure your cat will be fine x

My car had his front leg amputated when he was 2 (he's now 12) he manages perfectly well! He recovered really quickly. He doesn't bury his mess though anymore but will stand over it and go through the motion even though there is no leg! You can see him making the circling motion as if the leg was there 🤷‍♀️ still does it now! Otherwise no issues 😀

Cat not car. 🙄

Our cat had a front leg amputated at 14 months old. He is super speedy, climbs trees and catches birds! He also tries to dig and bury with his missing leg and you can see him wondering why it’s not working which is pretty funny! His missing leg is a talking point for all visitors too as he’s super friendly and makes sure everyone notices him. I’m sure your lovely cat will be just fine.

Sorry about your cat's traumatic experience. I'm sure she will be fine though.

I once saw a cat with no front legs! A birth defect I think. It got around quite well and could even climb the stairs.

Sorry to hear of her accident but so pleased she's recovering well. Sending ❤️
