Cats

We are thinking of buying our first family pet.
I have 2 little girls aged 3 & 6.

They would quite like a cat but I have never owned one previously.

Could you give me your thoughts on having a cat with 2 young children? Are they fairly low maintenance? Anything I should know e.g constant vet bills etc?

Thanks

The thing is with cats they can be low maintenance but some are so low maintenance you are basically feeding a freeloader who will not interact with your family but will still cost you in food and vet bills etc.

Others are happy to interact and become a real part of the family but then some will interact with claws and teeth which your small chdren might not appreciate.

And with cats they are what they are there is very little ability to train any behaviours into or out of them.

So in summary if you are happy to take the risk of your cat being a twat then go for it. If that would disappoint and upset your children then maybe think again.

What do YOU want? Excuse the capitals!!
A three and six year old won’t be feeding and cleaning out a litter tray etc. Cats can live over 20 years. They can be great family pets but if you don’t really want one then don’t. (They can also scratch furnishing and toilet inappropriately or bring in half dead rodents! No guarantee a cat won’t do any of these things!)

Ours get cuddles, purrs, and catch games. Also claws when the tummy rub gets too much. But a small price to pay. Her grace leaves us sometimes esp in the summer to go on hunts but does come back.
