Will a vet put down a healthy cat?

My neighbour has had a tough time; divorce, DV, etc.

She's now moving on and has to downsize. The new property is rented and has a strict 'no pets' policy.

She thinks it is kinder to have her 7 year old cat pts by a vet rather than for him to go through the trauma of being re-homed.

Will a vet actually do this?

It seems extreme to me, but I would like to see what others think before raising it with her.

He's a lovely cat btw and I can't take him as my son is allergic to him.

Tell her to speak to her LL again.

Thank you all so much.

Lots for me to think about here.

She is my friend and up to her neck in all sorts of crap, none of it her fault.

We were both in tears today about her situation, but she has readily agreed to rehoming the cat if he can't go with her. I just don't think she had really thought it through with all the other stuff going on.

The cat may find a wonderful new home. My friend runs a cat rescue place and they see many happy rehoming stories so to put a healthy cat to sleep is outrageous.

i hope to god the vet with refuse. No healthy animal should be put down.

Honestly, I’d tell her to sneak the cat into her new place and see how it goes.

That's what I did. Although my DCat did at the time stay with my exH for around 18 months due to me moving back into my family home and my Sisters cat is scared of everything including her own shadow. Once I'd found my own place though and had settled in I snuck Felix in. I was surprised at how quickly he settled into a new home. Inspections were interesting though. I'd have to make sure it was a day I wasn't working so I could bundle Felix into the car and go park up elsewhere until they'd gone. Although due to the heat one time and him getting stressed out I just said stuff it and took him back inside but thankfully my flat had already been done. We moved again November 21 and again he settled into our new place straight away. The only thing I've done both times is to make sure Ive been off work for a week. Although the first time I was only off cos I'd come in contact with someone with Covid so had to self isolate for 10 days.

Very extreme. My cat quite literally couldn’t have been more traumatised by coming to me (climbing up curtains, terrified, and hiding) but came around with some salmon bribes and seven years later lives the complete life of Riley.

My DCat was being rehomed aged 7. 10 yrs later and he's happy and healthy.
He was a bit scared for the first few weeks but has been fine absolutely fine after that.

After my was pts 15 years ago (cancer 😢)I had a call a few days later from the Vets. I thought my card had bounced or something. No, someone had taken their 8 year old healthy cat to be pts as it was stressed (due to renovations in the house). Vet refused, kept her there for a few weeks and ‘advertised her’ in the reception. She was all set up for a new home but then they had a family emergency and it fell through. So, to cut a long story short, she came home with me a week later and lived another 9 years in utter bliss. This was the little princess. Miss this cat so much.

Gorgeous cat. I will never, ever understand how anyone can consider euthanizing a healthy cat.

Our last DCat came to us as a a stray around the age of 7/8, and he had nearly 13 happy years of being adored by us all. He adored us in return too.
