Future pet....cat?

For years, my future life was to include having a dog. For walks, for comfort, for cuddles and just because I adore them. However, things changed and I’m not in a position to do daily walks so I understand it would be unfair.

Cats were an absolute no! I didn’t like them, could see no point in them and felt they were the antithesis of all a dog could offer/was. Thing is, I’ve been watching YouTube videos of ‘funny dogs and cats’, and I mean loads of the damn things over the last few months and cats are thawing my cold heart.

I didn’t realise how much of a personality they had.

Question is, how do I go about buying one/choosing one/knowing how much one would suit/type of personality?

Any advice welcome.

I don't think male/female makes a difference to how affectionate they are to you. Our boy was a grumpy old scrote (who I loved for his moods), and our females have all been cuddly. But they definitely choose for themselves who they love.

We've two right now. One adores me and sits on me the second I'm still long enough (I could do with her NOT perching on my back on the loo), and the other only wants to be with my 11yo daughter. Clearly not cupboard love since I'm the only one to feed them.

My current boy’s very affectionate on HIS terms. He’ll follow me around, rub against me & lick my hands but he’s not at all keen on being stroked.

The last boy was a lap cat & the only foster I’ve had so far who actively liked being carried around.

Have a look at the Facebook group "Memes I wish I could tag my cat in". It really goes a long way to explain cats 🐱

We have two cats. The older one only likes attention on her terms and has never been a cuddly cat. The younger one is basically a dog. She follows us around, plays fetch and loves attention and cuddles. She also has a couple of crazy episodes every day where she just runs around the house, as if she's chasing or being chased. I'm not a cat person but I like both of ours because of their very different personalities.

I'm a cat person 100% and I get why everyone wants to say YES OP cats are THE BEST but in reality many people don't think so, even when they've had one at home for a while. Same for dogs, maybe even more so! It really is best if OP can have a brief go at ownership via fostering, maybe a few months, to try it out. No need for yet another cat to be adopted then returned shortly after for fairly minor reasons.
