Death Of Cat

Franceen · 17/03/2023 06:53

My cat died two days ago. I never thought I would feel so upset. I feel the impact as much as human death. I always dismissed pet deaths to other people, holding human death as so valuable that a cat would mean very little.
How have you reacted to the death of your pet?

I'm so sorry for your loss Flowers

It’s grim @Franceen - we lost our dog last week - an old dog but he was fine 24 hrs beforehand so it was very sudden. House is empty, we are feeling bereft - so sorry to hear you are in the same place.

We lost our beloved cat to stomach cancer at the start of the year. She was 15 and we’d had her since she was a kitten, the entire family were devastated, especially my DD who was the cat’s best mate.

I am so sorry for your loss OP. They are family members and bring such joy.

HappyHolidai · 17/03/2023 18:47

Awful. Both times but especially the second. Such an enormous loss. Can't bear to write more.

I was so shocked and upset the more recent time that I was very sick and was off work for a few days. When I went back in I was so pale my boss got HR to check on me a couple of days later.

FlosCampi · 17/03/2023 18:52

It's horrible, your cat was a beloved member of the family, of course you're bereft. What helped for me was burying him, feeling we had him safely at home, and seeing all the lovely silly furry photos my family shared when i asked. You gave them such a nice life, they loved you too. Grief is the price we pay for love. In a few weeks, think of getting another cat or a couple of kittens? It's not the same, but it's similar, and fills the emptiness and takes the edge off the pain.🌹

so sorry for your loss OP, the pain of losing a pet should not be devalued. many years have gone by since I last had to say goodbye to a pet but can still remember the pain. time helps. X

I'm so sorry OP. I've lost two cats over the years and have been utterly devastated each time. I totally understand what you are going through. Losing my first cat after 18 years was the worst loss of my life and it took me 3 years to consider having another. I kept bursting into tears for months after he died but it does get better OP - time really is the greatest healer. Thinking of you Flowers

Thanks for all your answers. Its as if I have been enlightened. I truly never valued my cat from the aspect of his death. I hope this makes sense. I am devastated.
Thanks for all your replies.

It's awful. I've had quite a few cats die over the years (pets and rescue). Every single one broke a bit of my heart, and I can't really think about of them for too long without my heart breaking again. 💔

LadyLolaRuben · 17/03/2023 21:19

Its terrible OP. Can be worse than losing human family because you live with these beings in your home day in and day out. You put your plans and routine around them so they become centre of your world. The house can feel so still.

No one who hasn't suffered the loss of a pet can truly understand. I think of my pets that have past every day and miss them. One of my dogs I lost 7 years ago and I still really miss him.

I do make a beeline now for people who lose their pets and check in on them especially co-workers. Employers don't understand but, I'm in a senior role and give discretionary days off. Take care, it does get easier. The memories in time start to bring smiles and not tears x

Doyouthinktheyknow · 17/03/2023 21:33

So sorry for your loss💐

We lost a dog in my teens that had been with us from when I was very young. I was devastated, it was awful.

I then lost an amazing pet rat in my twenties which sounds ludicrous but he was the most amazing rat and helped me so much through difficult times. I was heartbroken at his loss.

I’ve got a cat now and she really is like my baby. I don’t know how I will cope with her loss. It is worth it though, pets bring so much joy and love.

I´m so sorry for your loss

I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost one of my cats and I was devastated, proper sobbing in the walk in fridge at work, crying through my gym class because I couldn't face going home and crying there on the couch without my darling cat. I still have her collar

Itsvalentino · 20/03/2023 21:31

I’m so sorry OP, they are such a major part of our lives, losing a pet is awful.

My darling cat is coming up for 15, and some days I start crying just at the thought of her leaving me. I’ve told her she has to live until she is 30 🤞🏼🤞🏼

One of mine was PTS on Saturday, I'm heartbroken. But it was the right thing.

OnTheBoardwalk · 09/08/2023 21:43

So sorry for your loss. They really do leave a hole in your heart.

I was broken for a year after my 17 year old cat died and couldn’t think about getting another cat it hurt so much

I've now got 2 rescue cats destroying my house. Part of the hole will always be there

RosesAndHellebores · 09/08/2023 21:49

I am so sorry op. It's awful.Flowers

Our boy left very suddenly and unexpectedly in the New Year. We had him cremated and we dug a little rose bed and buried his ashes there. It has a little memorial plaque. It felt better once he was home. Even DH cried.

It's loss that can't be equated with losing a relative, however close.

We got two rescues sooner than I'd have liked, but they came up and needed cat experienced owners and a lot of patience. They have helped hugely.
