Hi

has anyone got pet rats can u tell me if they smell please?

I really want to get 2 males but whilst researching I’m reading that there urine stinks and they like to mark wherever they go?

on the other hand I’m reading they are the cleanest pets so I’m confused as to what’s right?

I don’t actually mind a little bit of a smell as long as it’s kept in there cage and not all over the house..

looking for some honest answers please ☺️

I don't own any yet but will be getting some. The consensus is that they do smell but it can be helped by getting a good deep substrate and getting the cleaning balance right. Not too much, not too little. Air purifiers are meant to help too so I'm going to get one. We often have a cat food smell coming from the kitchen so having one in the lounge where the rats will be could help that too.

I had 2 rats as a teenager. They do smell if they urinate everywhere obviously. Butbif you keep the cage clean, then they dont. Mine were in my room and my mum is very sensitive to smell. She didnt mind the pets at all. Rats can also be trained very well. Mine had the run of the room and they always went in their cage to pee. I also took them out with me (school, lake etc. 🙈) they never peed on me or anything. They waited until i put them on the ground.
