Does anyone know how to tell when a dog is in labour???

I have a chihuahua who is heavily pregnant and I've worked out that she's due on friday.
Does any one know what signs of early labour I should look out for? Apart from the puppies popping out of course!!

lots of panting

Beauregard · 30/01/2008 23:33

Not sure but do you have a Whelping box?

whydoesithavetobeme · 30/01/2008 23:34

Nesting

moodywren · 30/01/2008 23:40

I have got her a box with a bed and warm blankets in it. She's really grumpy with the other dogs so have moved her away from them.

Don't know why but I think she'll have them at night. Thinking about sleeping in the room with her, in case she does go into labour and has any problems.

How long does it take for her to give birth? Could ask my BIL all these questions but he's so patronising I'd rather as you.

Exciting!

When she does go into labour, make sure she has a live "Could this be labour?" thread on MN

I'm a nervous wreck.

This is worse than having my own kids

Ok, our deefa's birthing story!
Mon evening very very restless, whinging, wouldn't let me sleep. Had to sleep on the flooor next to her.
Tues am restless again, wandering constantly.
Tues 1pm ish trying to hide in enclosed spaces. Puppy 1 pops out. Dog abandons puppy and hides under bed. Puppy is introduced to mum and she cleans puppy up, but doesn't feed her. An hour or so later, restless again, pacing, pup arrives. Last pup (number 8) arrived at 10pm.

Each time it was obvious when one was going to be born. She had them in rediculous places, all around the house and even outside . Follow her everywhere!

They don't usually start feeding until all have arrived, although ours started feeding after pup 7.

If it is mums first litter she may not know what to do or what on earth is happening to her. Reassure her, and make sure she is introduced and encouraged to clean each pup.

dh had to break the sack, tie the umbilical, and check mouth was clear for the first one.

Its fab. I wish we could have another litter.

I remeber our dog starting to pace about the house, a bit manically. Lots of pacing, looking distracted.

do they grab the G&A and start swearing??

seriously though, I have no idea..

moodywren · 02/02/2008 20:20

Thanks for your posts. She was due yesterday but still no sign. She's in a little blocked off area in my lounge so I am always nearby and she's blocke in so she can't deposit puppies all over the house, and also so that the kids leave her alone.

Wish she'd hurry up and have them, then I can relax a bit, I am so worried that something might go wrong.

She'll be fine, just go with the flow. Have you got your vet's telephone number easily accessible?

I seriously meant the bit about following her. Let her walk around as much as she wants to, but if she goes outside for a wee, follow her, she might drop a puppy out there!

moodywren · 02/02/2008 23:26

Hadn't thought about when she goes for a wee.

Vets phone number at the ready.

Come on then. Whats happening? Any puppies yet?

moodywren · 04/02/2008 09:49

We have two puppies born yesterday morning, mum did really well and delivered them herself, cleaned them up and is feeding them so I haven't had to intervene at all.

What a relief!

They seem very strong and have certainly got good vocal cords.

Mum was very tired yesterday, but is looking much better this morning and she even asked to go out to the toilet.

I am wondering if there are any suppliments I can give her to help with her milk production. Did have a look in the local pet shop but couldn't find anything.

Will post photos as soon as she'll let me take some.

Thanks for your support
Does this make me a grandma???
