Fleas but no pets please help!

So it seems we picked up fleas from a stay at an Airbnb back in may this year. We must have bought them back with us to our home as we started noticing the fleas and the bites all over us (we have 2 young children too).

Since then we paid for a professional company to get rid of them, they came back twice and we had a few weeks flea free. I then also used Indorex and daily hoovering to kill what I thought were some strays!

Now we’ve started getting bites again 😫
how can I get rid of them?? What am I doing wrong? We have zero pets in the house, never have. I’m also pregnant and really want this sorted once and for all! Please can anyone help or give any advice.

Have you actually seen fleas? Could it be bed bugs?

nousernameleft · 14/11/2022 21:02

Yes I’ve seen them - also been checking the beds for bed bugs as that crossed my mind but no signs.

@nousernameleft hello, have you had any luck at removing them? Hopelessly looking for the answers as we also have no pets!

DogInATent · 27/12/2022 21:02

Get a specialist professional in. Not just one that treats, but one that identifies the problem species. Cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis, also found on dogs) will cycle a few times without a host. There may be different treatment strategies for other species.

I still haven’t sorted it although it was got better after a couple of bursts of indorex - we had professionals come in twice which worked for a few weeks but then they appeared again. There is definitely some kind of cycle happening, just not sure how to break it 😫

Thank you @nousernameleft did you keep up with the indorex when it got better at all or did you stop? I'm looking for any solutions possible!

I already spray my house as a precaution every three months. I'm very stressed

DogInATent · 27/12/2022 21:36

Did the professionals identify the flea species involved?

DogInATent · 27/12/2022 21:39

@MotherHaryy - for pet fleas forget the aerosol sprays. Get the flea bombs and smoke the house. It's easy and it's thorough. I've had to do it a couple of times when we had cats and it's pretty foolproof.

LassoOfTruth · 27/12/2022 21:41

Do you have any signs of mice? They can sometimes bring in fleas too. Look for black/dark brown grains of what looks like rice in the corners of rooms. Sorry OP fleas are such a pain!

Summergarden · 27/12/2022 21:51

I can sympathise as have had the same before, a guest brought fleas into the house from her dog at home and we have no pets.

Unfortunately it’s usually harder to get rid of them when you have no resident pets as the fleas have to feed on you instead of the dog or cat. You could obviously flea treat a pet to help get rid but can’t flea treat yourselves!

it took us 3 professional whole house treatments and following the advice about not hoovering for However long they recommended.

you’ll get rid of them too OP, hang in there!

piedbeauty · 27/12/2022 22:33

Fuck's sake, really???

See my thread on fleas in a holiday home. Got home today and am terrified they have come with us 🙄😬😢

Thought they'd be easier to get rid of??

cheeseisthebest · 27/12/2022 22:37

What's the not hoovering advice? My dog had cat fleas a few weeks ago, no idea how as he has regular vet strength treatment and we don't have a cat. I've been combing him regularly and he seems fine. We sprayed whole house and washed and hoovered everything.

cheeseisthebest · 27/12/2022 22:37

He was also treated with extra medication.

nousernameleft · 28/12/2022 07:54

@MotherHaryy I’ve done the indorex and regular hoovering a couple of times when I see signs (bites) but haven’t done it for a couple of months now. My husband told me he has a couple of new bites again last night! So might be time for another round. Good luck to you too.

@DogInATent no they did not specify flea type.

we’ve had mice a long time ago which we dealt with and thankfully no signs since then so pretty sure it’s not that - just the result from the ones we picked up on holiday and can’t shake off.

I’m also pregnant so even more desperate to sort this out once and for all!!
