Cat neutering for the novice!

Our (male) kitten is off to be neutered tomorrow and DD (nearly 5) will want to know ALL the ins and outs - she is going through the vet phase! Can't really get away with just saying 'they are going to chop his knackers off'. Anyone know what they do and how they do it so we can be one step ahead of the questions

Erm, well actually that is about the long and short of it! Male cats are incredibly easy to neuter. Basically after the anaesthetic is given and the surgical site is prepared a cut is made in each side of the scrotum one for each testicle. The testicle is removed from the sac and the blood supply tied off. The testicle is then cut off above where the blood supply is tied off and the cat is woken up again. They usually have pain killers before the surgery is done. No stitches in the scrotum, it just heals up fine without as the cuts are so small. Occasionally cats will lick at the site post operatively and will need to wear a lampshade collar, but most of them are fine without.

Thanks beautifulgirls, that's just the sort of detail DD will require!

When our cat was done the vet said not to give normal cat food for a couple of days. One of his suggestions was scrambled egg! The cat was unamused
