Cat bereavement

i have just had to put my beloved cat to sleep. He was my baby and I’m devastated. I don’t feel that I can work today. I know that, from a legal standpoint, employers are not required to give workers any time off to grieve for pets, but AIBU to ask for a day off?

I had my cat PTS a few weeks ago.

She was nearly 19 and had been in my DS' life since he was 3 and my DD since she was 6.

My DS wanted to be with her on her last day - he just told his manager 'family issues', and they said no problem and asked no further questions. Could you try this ?

On the other hand my DD said goodbye to our cat the night before then went to work on the day she was PTS. She it helped being busy.

I’m really sorry for your loss. I would tell work you have a headache or bug to avoid problems.

@ItsReallyOnlyMe I’m so sorry to hear about your loss. Our cat was 19 and we had him since a kitten. It’s heartbreaking isn’t it? I agree that keeping busy can also help.

It's really awful OP. Pet grief is very real. It's a big thick black cloud for a few weeks, that's all I can describe it as. Look after yourself for the next few days. I went to work and my colleagues were really kind & most had had similar experiences, so being and talking with them can help too.

Hi op. So sorry for your loss. What did you decide in the end? I lost my dcat yesterday, so I know all too well how you feel. It’s been 24 hours and I’m exhausted from the crying, I’m hoping I feel better soon. Take care of yourself.
