I would LOVE a dog (had dogs as a child but DM didnt work)
should I go for a cat instead or something smaller like rabbit or hamster?

really sorry for your loss

fortyplus · 18/01/2008 00:29

Aww thank you. I felt so bad I did a whole thread about it. I was more sad than when I lost my grandparents - that's really awful isn't it?

Lauriefairycake · 18/01/2008 00:34

nope, I cried for 5 days solid when I lost one very special one about 8 years ago. I had to take compassionate leave from work. However I did accidentally run him over so it was frankly the worst week of my life.

Noone can overemote as much as me

Poor sparklygothkat ran her cat over last week, too

Lauriefairycake · 18/01/2008 00:40

I know, I posted on that too - hope she's ok. Its so hard when they die (however they die).

When mistressmiggins come back we'll have depressed her with our talk about death

She'll end up with a fruit fly so she doesnt get attached

People were so kind to me... here

I'm missing her dreadfully. My other cat is funny and friendly in a demanding sort of way, but she's just not the same as my dear Sophie

What a lovely thread, people are so kind on here.

have you read the poem 'the other gate'. I found it on a pet bereavement site and it really comforted me.

Also in the Times on sunday there was a story about a dog and a cat that grew up together and slept in the same basket and when the cat died they buried it in the garden. The next day the owners came down to find the dog had dug his friend up, licked him clean, and put him back in the basket.

Just the loveliest story, every time I've thought of that this week I've got all teary.

fortyplus · 18/01/2008 00:59

I heard that on the radio. So sweet... what must the dog have been thinking? 'Why have the b*stards put my friend in that hole?'!

I'll look up the poem - thanks

Better go to bed as I have work in the morning.

I know someone who works three days a week and has fairly recently got a puppy, she does have relatives living close by and I believe they helped out a lot in the early weeks and as the dog is getting a bit older she is now able to leave her for longer periods of time, presumably someone will always pop in at lunchtime to take the dog out etc.
