Basically I have a boy and a girl together, (breeders advice )

Thet are being seperated tonight, we have been waiting for the double hutch to arrive.

They are 18 weeks old.

I put a bowl next to the littertray and it had wee in it so I did a test.

It says negative,. but is that true?

Would you still take her to the vets,

do human tests work on rabbits - and does the fact it probably has the males rabbits wee in to make a difference?

I would have thought it would be unlikely to work.

even if the hormones are the same, the size of the rabbit, in comparison to the size of a human, would mean that the levels would be lower, and probably not detectable.

Yea i suppose so, i thought id just give it a go,

shall i take her to the vets soon or leave it a few weeks?

How do you know it wasnt boy rabbit wee?

wannaBe · 15/01/2008 14:40

I would just leave it. nothing vet can do if she's pg anyway so you'll just have to wait until she gives birth.

human pregnancy test react to HUMAN chorionic gonadatrophin. the clue's in the name . i'd take her to the vet....

Well, they used to use rabbits for human pregnancy tests, so the hormones must have some similarity, but I don't think a negative (specially when it could have been the male rabbit's wee) definitely proves she isn't.....

nortynamechanger · 15/01/2008 15:17

Yes AMIS, I was told this recently - they used to inject human wee into the rabbit and if it died you were pregnant. I thought I was being wound up?

AMumInScotland · 15/01/2008 16:48

The rabbit always died.... they injected the human wee into the rabbit, waited (a few days I think), killed the rabbit, and examined its ovaries. The human pregnancy hormone had some effect on the rabbit ovaries - not sure what, but I think they had to look under a microscope....

This featured in an episode of MASH, where they wanted to use one of Radar's pet rabbits to do the test - but they just anaesthetised it and removed the ovaries...

Yummers · 15/01/2008 17:01

I don't think it would work because the hormone detected in pregnancy tests is called human chorionic gonadotrcopin (hcg) and is as the name would suggest, only present in humans.
