Preparing our DD

Our cat is ill, possibly kidney disease. All his numbers are off the chart.
He will be at the vets for next 2 days and then hoping we can have him home for bit a longer.
He is 15.
DD is 6, she loves him, we all do. I'm blimming devastated.

How do we best prepare DD for the worst?

She already has worries about people she loves dying.

Losing a pet is so sad, but often kids don't take it as badly as adults do.
Mine were often asking about a new puppy or kitten long before I was able to consider it. :(
There are good general guidelines here>

But definitely have a conversation with your DD before your beloved kitty comes home to prepare her, and don't be afraid of her feelings.

We do have a dog as well, he's only 1 so I do think he will be a distraction of sorts.

Her first word was cat! He sleeps in her room at night.

Just so awful 😢

I'm so sorry. I hope you get to spend a bit more time with him before you have to say goodbye.

It's super sad :( it's important to let her know it's ok to be sad and to have a damn good cry. Maybe you could make a memory box for kitty together? With lots of photos, favourite toys, drawings etc. Taking some new ones while kitty is still with you - especially if you have a polaroid type camera.

We let our boy go this morning.

So so sad. Our DD is heartbroken but glad we got one more night with him
