Confused about puppy food please help

I feel so stupid but I'm struggling to understand the instructions on how much to feed my puppy.

8week old Cocker spaniel weight around 2-2.5kg

So it's either 2months 5kg dived by 2 to match his weight that's 52.5g. then it say feed 3x a day. So is that 52.5g per meal or divided by 3 to give around 18g per meal

Or do I go by adult weight expected around 15kg thats says 240g.
I'm certain this won't be for each meal so is it 240 divided by 3meals - 80g per meal?

Please help!

Has the breeder not given you any advice? Is that the food that he's been weaned on to? It's pretty crap food tbh.

To begin with, it looks like you need to go by the expected adult weight and not the puppy's current weight. Other puppy brands seem to have the same guidelines and yes the grams that they are suggesting is for the whole day so divide that amount by 3.

I asked she said she just had food out for pups all the time :( yes same food.

It probably is! He had diahrea on the first night so I called vet and he's been on chicken and rice for 3days. Back onto normal food today. I have his vaccinations tomorrow so will get advice on how to change to other food etc.

But just need to know how much today as I don't want to over or under feed him!

Thank you. This morning I fed 52.5 gram as I thought it was current weight then that amount x3!

After feeding I re read and got confused and belived what you've said is the right way so 240g divided by 3!

I'll do 4 meals today to make up for the shorter breakfast and make sure the next 3 all add it to 240 for the day as a whole

Op, get a better quality food. I raised my pups on Autarky puppy & junior. It's not horrendously priced & is very reasonable nutrition wise.
I also added some chicken/mince/eggs to up the protein 3 or 4 days a week.

However looking at the instructions, you would go by eventual adult weight & divide grams by meals.

Food will be changed! The breeder used this so I carried on as I read that's best. As I said he had a bad belly vet advise chicken and rice so this is his first full day on the stuff. When I speak to the vet tomorrow I will ask their advise on changing it.

I think it is 80g per meal. However what I found with my puppy was that he wasn't keen on dry food, since I switched to wet food (Naturediet) he devours it. If he liked chicken and rice reintroduce "normal" food very slowly, and I agree, I suggest trying a better quality food to see if it makes a difference, again introduced slowly. Dog feeding is a minefield.

InkySquid · 12/04/2022 07:44

I'd probably start off on 50g a day over 4 meals rather than 3. Most cocker spaniels wouldn't end up being 15kg. I'd keep a close eye with pup that young, is he wormed etc.?

Anonjd3 · 12/04/2022 07:46

He was on wet and dry! Todays he's first day back on his previous food so I will do two 80g portion of this dry food. Plus One portion of the wet food.

I will get all the info from the vet tomorrow I just posted because didn't want to overfeed him now that he's only just got over his bad belly!

Update- first day back on this and his poo is already getting softner and smells more! Definitely have to change his food. It wasn't
my choice, as I've said I kept the same band the breeder was giving :(

I'll look up all the ones you have suggested and start to change it bit by bit tomorrow thank you

The advice for changing food is to mix the two foodstuffs together to start with - with a smaller ratio of the new food then increasing proportion so that the change has less of an impact on their digestive system.

If this is your first dog you may also find the new puppy threads in 'the doghouse' section helpful .

If the food isn't agreeing anyway, I wouldn't worry too much about a gradual switch.

Anonjd3 · 13/04/2022 21:38

Update!
So back on normal food yesterday after 3 days on chicken and rice.

Last poo last night and this morning was watery with blood again!

Lucky we had our vaccinations booked in so spoke to vet. They definitely think it's the food. So we're on prescription wet and dry food. Mixing together and the cutting down the wet one and keeping on the prescription dry one for the time being Its called hills.

We also get worming stuff just incase.

They recommend waiting too see if this clears before having vaccinations as we don't want to upset him anymore. Hopfully his belly sorts itself out over the next few days so we can get them done next week. Thank you all x
