How can I stop my cat from sleeping on my dining table at night?

The cat is shut in the kitchen/diner at night. His cat flap is in there. We have an old towel for him to sleep on which we put on one of the dining chairs, but instead he chooses to sleep on our dining table. He is nearly always sitting on it when I come down for breakfast and there is fur and fluff all over the place which I have to clean up daily. I am beginning to dislike him!

Do you think its worth getting a cat bed?

I shut the kitchen door behind him because he occasionally brings a creature in and I can't stand the thought of finding it somewhere else in the house. If he's confined to one room at least I know roughly where it will be.

Is there anything I can put on the dining table to put him off?

I would get a cheap wipable plastic table cloth to put over it at night then take it of in the morning, or put the chairs upside down on the table so there is no space.

great ideas COV - do both

I won a fab pet bed in a raffle. I wouldn't have normally bothered to buy one. I put it up out of the way then immediately found both kittens in it. They spend probably about 50% of their lives in there now.

Put orange peel all over it.

I would pop two of the legs up on bricks and then it would gently slide off the table...eventually would get bored of this and find somewhere else [fgin]

put the towel on the table or buy a cat bed then you just lift it off in the morning.

stick a cardboard box on the table - the cat will sleep in it

(well 99% of cats will)

claricebean - your idea could leave a few scratch trails down the table - remember God gave cats very sharp claws for holding on
