My cat who went missing is better...

SoloISland · 17/09/2021 11:40

… and driving me …. He has been unwell and sleeping after his three days in the wilderness... and I made the executive decision, that all things duly considered, he will, aged seventeen, now be an indoor cat.

So far he has not been near the door but is abed with me, or doing the silent miaou by the bed. And chunnering .

But the weather is closing in ie wind and heavy rain so no way is he going to go out. [
Wish me luck...

PandoraP · 17/09/2021 14:44

Good luck OP. I am not sure you are the decision maker here Grin

He is beautiful, or I suppose I should say handsome!!
My boy was a ginger /white one like that.
He would NOT have coped with being an indoor cat! I understand your worry, but after 17 years I think it's mean to try to take his freedom away. Get him chipped if he isn't and get him a quick release collar. Then let him enjoy his last few years!

PainterInPeril · 17/09/2021 14:47

I'm going to be honest here, he looks like he's planning his revenge....YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!Grin

I googled old age in cats as his behaviour in staying out for seventy two hours was totally out of character and that worried me. And he was in a very poor state when he did come home. Soaked, matted fur, cold and just miserable. I think much longer and he would have died.

And yes, this is something that happens as it does with us. Senility etc. It has taken three days for him to be himself again. And we are into wild wet and windy weather out here now Ireland west coast Atlantic coast.

They all advise keeping him in, and actually after the first

moments, he has never been near the door.

We live on a small wild offshore island. And I am sure now that he had some kind of episode, then got too weak.

So I am NOT going to take that risk again. It was not as it he came home fit and well. I am deeply grateful he made it home. At one stage thought I would never find him as has been the case with others on this forum
Actually as I am much abed, he is living it up abed with me. lol... I think he got a scare too, I have always been here all day and night for him and he is as devoted as a dog.

Oh that is of course his passport photo.. lol..

He has slept and eaten and slept again, always alongside me. And now in essence he is not well enough to be free range. and I am always here which is what really counts to him.

He is absolutely, utterly gorgeous. Definitely a good decision even if he drives you mad, we have always kept our late teenaged cats indoors or only allowed out under close supervision because of the increased risk to them as they start to get a bit more infirm.

Thank you. I think you can imagine what I went through when he was missing... He is revelling in the extra attention. Currently snug abed with me under my knees and fast asleep. I am now exiling him to the kitchen, door closed, at night at else no sleep But he has always been a very tactile cat. I literally saved his life when he was a kitten and he has never forgotten it. And he has only shown any interest in the door when I am opening it so not fussed really. I have a lead but no collar. Will never forget the state he was in that time.

lol... Many are but it has its moments. This island is depopulating and has no facilities,,, which is why I chose it after checking all the West Coast islands.

I lived a decade on an outer Northern Orkney Island so am inured to island life. It is a life like no other but you need to know what you are at else you would fast become a liability.

The ferryman said to a visitor once as we were all chatting, " We soon found that this one was not soft, but a bit tough, like. " and t was the best compliment I ever had. I almost never ask for help etc so when I do it is really important ; self sufficient and respectful of others who have lived here all their lives as did their families before them. Waiting to see where I can fit in.
Other incomers can be pushy etc. Not right or kind.
Not mindimg when we get cut off for whiles in winter

And the sheer peace here. Love it. And until this with the cats all has been grand.

Dreading the night. another without the cats. Dreading it. May take time out from here. Not good company. My illness has worsened with the stress and anxiety.

Hug your cats Bye

He snook past me two days ago. I have managed to get all the others in. But my old boy? too ill just now to tramp the fields any more.

Called the neighbour to ask him to check all the sheds etc as last time he had clearly been shut in somewhere.

This is new behaviour.
