Would a cat with a home do this?

We've recently moved into a new house with plenty of surrounding properties.

There's a lovely black cat who comes around nearly everyday, he looks cleanish but a little skinny and no collar.

He was pretty frightened at first and would run when I came outside, I've started leaving small amounts of food and water out which he takes. (Don't want to feed too much incase he is a pet and ends up overfed)

I've noticed he's always trying to get into bins which made me think he's possibly not a pet? I also don't want to keep encouraging feeding if he's been cared for at home.

My H says to leave alone as he will have an owner and could make him unwell. (Only feeding him meat)

He even came in the house yesterday while I was in the back but ran out when he heard me coming in.

But, honestly, I just want to look after him if he's had a shit time but have no idea how to tell if he has an owner.

You shouldn't really feed him - i

In time you can catch him and take him to a vet to scan for a chip. Our black cat doesn't have a collar but is definitely not skinny!

If he's moved and is coming back for instance, this will only encourage him.

When you can get close enough I'd tape a paper collar to him with a note saying pls text [your phone number] if you are the owner of this cat and see what happens.

If no response then try to get him scanned

Ask the neighbours if they know him. On my local Facebook, one post & you'll get a detailed life history (about both cat & local owners).

And then he’s yours Smile
