Hello we adopted a little kitten 5 weeks ago with the intent on improving mine and my 17 year old daughters mental health as we have severe mental illnesses, she also suffers with an eating disorder. My youngest son has autism and his prone to meltdowns but he’s so gentle with the kitten. About 4 or 5 evenings ago after my husband had finished fixing the tumble dryer and taking out the dust my oldest son who is 19 started rubbing his eyes, nose and mouth and sniffing occasionally. He has been taking loratadine antihistamine but to no effect so he’s been on cetirizine for last a few days which is working as he’s stopped itching and has only sniffed a few times today. He has epilepsy so is on epilepsy medication so has to be careful what antihistamines he can take and due to autism he can’t swallow pills. I’ve been assured by a few different professionals such as the epilepsy nurse and gp that cetirizine is safe for him but I still worry and I don’t like the thought of him being on antihistamines long term. I’ve brought an air purifier, allerpet dander reducing liquid, waterless cat shampoo and the kitten has started a new food which reduces cat allergies. The cat is not allowed upstairs...it’s not easy just to rehome kitty as my mental health is so bad I ended up with the crisis team late at night last week in a mess feeling suicidal...my daughter also wouldn’t cope if we had to rehome. Anyone live happily with cats despite allergies please? I’m literally going out of my mind worrying about my son, daughter and kitten. Next I will literally be ripping the living room carpet up! Thanks for reading x
