Crating a dog in this heat

Would you crate your dog in this heat? 7 month old, doesn’t seem a particular chewer, but haven’t left him out of his crate yet. Dog has been panting all day, not sure whether to leave the crate door open as it’s so warm. What do people do?

Confused

How long have you not let him out of his crate for?

Camelsandalpacas · 19/07/2021 21:34

As in overnight! He wanders around all day, sorry, didn’t make that clear! Just haven’t left the door open at night yet, but it seems too warm for him to be in there tonight.

I wouldn't - he'll need access to water for a start. I think in this heat they will all be very subdued, so less chance of throwing a rager while you're asleep ;-)

Our pup isn’t being crated overnight just now as crate is in a room at 28 degrees. She’s currently sleeping with us in an air conditioned room at 19 degrees. Although I do put her in the crate but do give her the option, as in I do not close the crate door!! So obviously she sleeps with us

Seems as good a time as any to get rid of the crate...

Shapesorted · 19/07/2021 21:40

What's the reason for still crating him? Not sure I would, our dog moves around to find a cool spot all the time.

MotionActivatedDog · 19/07/2021 21:44

Limit his access to one room, kitchen? Remove anything he could chew. Get him a cool mat for inside the crate, put the crate in the kitchen and leave the crate door open. Make sure he has fresh water. Remove any dog toys too.

I wouldn’t close the door on a dog crate in any heat.

MajesticWhine · 19/07/2021 21:57

I have a similar situation to you OP. Pup is very happy in the crate for the night and it keeps him out of trouble. But it's too hot now. If he is loose he can find somewhere cooler but I am a bit worried he will annoy other DDog, wee on the floor, rip stuff up etc.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 19/07/2021 21:59

No! Jesus Christ. Poor pup!

Vetyveriohohoh · 19/07/2021 22:02

We are but her crate is in the coolest spot in the house, she has access to water and is very contented in there

Veterinari · 19/07/2021 22:02

No dog should be deprived of water overnight Confused

Crates if used properly are a safe space the dog chooses to be in - they shouldn't be locked

SimonJT · 19/07/2021 22:07

Ours stays in the crate every night, not sure why some people think dogs in crates don’t have access to water.

Camelsandalpacas · 19/07/2021 22:08

He does have water in a bowl that clips to the side of the crate. Thank you to everyone, will leave the door open and remove toys etc.

We put a stair gate on the kitchen. She still has the crate and went in earlier shutting the door behind herGrin she was fully crated overnight until she was around 5/6 months, then we added the stair gate so she can access water etc . At now 4 she still choses to go to bed in her crate and shuts the door!
