He has plaque build up round his teeth and a few month back the vet gave us some seaweed stuff called Plaque Off that we sprinkle on his food daily. He's been back today for something else but she looked in his mouth while he was there and said there's still some plaque there and it's looking like they're gonna need cleaning after christmas. Has anyone had this and how much does it cost? He's a Lhasa Apso.

You really need to talk to your vet about this as the range could be huge depending upon the time needed to deal with the issues in the mouth. Age may also be a factor as blood tests may be needed prior to the anaesthetic for safety reasons and these will also add cost if needed. Also different vets will charge differently. Those doing a good job will tend to be a bit more expensive as they have decent kit - but you pay for what you get really. Probably expect anything from £150 up to about £400 if there is a lot of work to be done - though I suspect this is not the case as they are not having him in urgently.

can you not get a dog-tooth brush/paste and do it yourself?

I suppose it depends where you live. Our old vets in St Andrews only charged us £110 for cleaning teeth and removing 3! I thought that wasn't bad.

Those prices seem every expensive. of course it depends on what area you live in as this has an effect on costs. but at my surgery a basic descale is about £50, the pre anaesthetic blood test is £20, if your dog is over 5-6 I would advise this but it is optional. If teeth need to be removed it will be more expensive as more time is needed and course of anti-biotics needs to be given. but it ir rarely over £100.

But ask your vet for a quote as it can vary greatly.
