My poor puppy [sadface]

Just wanted to share my misery and issue somewhat of a cautionary tale . My 10 weeks old puppy was scratched yesterday by one of our cats and it turns out she has been got in the eye.

She is having an operation this afternoon but there is less than 50% chance that they will be able to save some of the sight (some is deffo gone) and even the eye itself.

Fortunately we do have insurance (only just) as it's going to cost about three grand but watch out for your kitties!!

I feel sick

OH heck. So sorry to hear that. Good luck for the op.

have you had any news? Such a sad thing to happen

LazyLinePainterJane · 12/11/2007 20:51

Well, the eye people have called and there was nothing untoward with regard to the operation. She might be able to come home tomorrow but we might not know whats going on with her vision for 6 moths or so, it's just a case of waiting to see if it gets worse or better.

The worst thing is, it might look alright for the next few weeks or even months and then get worse and she still might have to have the eye removed. I know that dogs cope fine but it just seems unfair as she is so small.

Even if it works, her vision will always be off.

thanks guys

LLPJ That is so sad

I'm sure she will be absolutely fine - just such a shame it happened.

My small dog had her eye scratched too by our other small dog when she was 1 yr old, she had ointment in for a week but vet thought she may lose the eye and the next week had an op to sew the third eyelid up, then a couple weeks later another op they undid it again but it wasnt healed so they sewed it up again, She now has a mark in the centre of the eye and has lost some of the sight but they did luckily save her eye, she is now nearly 10 years old.

She's an English Springer.

We initially thought that it was just a scratch across the cornea, the vet said that it should heal by itself or could be sewn but should be okay. The problem is that the cat claw initially went deeper in and has penetrated through the iris and deeper so that gel from inside the eye is seeping out. This can cause all sorts of problems with infection and whatnot.

Oooooh it's all a bit gross [sickface]

Shall be calling them soon to see how she is.

Oh, poor little lamb. But springers are such happy-go-lucky dogs, I'm sure he/she will be fine whatever the outcome.

Can you post a piccy of your springer puppy? Is it liver or black? Can you tell I luuuuuuuurve springers?

LazyLinePainterJane · 13/11/2007 11:02

:D

She is on my profile, not a great pic as it does not truly show her inherent loopiness
